TV Viewing figures - DR WHO - XMAS DAY episode

Down by 1.1 Million on last year's THE CHRISTMAS INVASION (which, I think, was better...), 8.7 Million UK viewers for THE RUNAWAY BRIDE.

5th overall across all TV channels for Christmas Day.

I would like to see the 15-minute breakdown of viewers - I think it probably lost quite a few in the first 20 mins or so. But it picked up a bit after that.

8.7million are the intial overnight figures, they are likely to end up much higher once the figures are adjusted for PVR/vcr viewings etc, even so, they are still good figures (especially when compared with the other programmes).

Catherine Tate factor I think.

Most annoying woman on telly, and the only reason why I gave the show a wide berth.

EMMERDALE will beat it when TIMESHIFT is taken into account.

On what (past) evidence do you base that then?

Timeshift will be low for THE RUNAWAY BRIDE because of the high level of PESTER POWER exercised by the CHILDREN who insisted on watching DOCTOR WHO. So EMMERDALE will pick up a bigger timeshift because the kiddies PARENTS would have taped the GOINGS-ON on the FARM for later.

So there is no historical evidence then, just an opinion which could work both ways:

Parents recorded DW because they had their elderly relatives around (who would have preferred Emmerdale) ....

See .... the supposition can work on other levels to produce a different result. Best to wait until the official figures are out than to dress up speculation and opinion as fact.

Oh how LUDICROUS. Whether you're a fan of her or not, there is absolutely NO WAY Catherine Tate will have affected the viewing figures for the worse... if she had any effect, it would have been for the better, because she has a loyal legion of 4 million fans. She'll have turned more non-fans ON than fans off.

Context is the magic word to be used when assessing ratings. Last year's xmas special was up against Celebrity who wants to be a millionaire, this time DW was up against one of the top rated soaps being broadcast at its usual 7pm Monday night slot, an episode moreover which was the much advertised culmination of a long brewing story line involving that soap favourite, murder.

The detailed ratings figures over on the OG forums also make for an encouraging read, with each five minute segment from 1900 to 1955 showing a steadily increasing viewership from 8.12 mill at the start to 9.25 at the end, so most people seemed to stay hooked through the whole show.

The AI figures are always more interesting anyway, I watched it from start to finish and went away thinking this must have been RTDs gift to those with an attention deficit disorder.

I enjoyed the episode despite being 61 and counting ! My attention was really drawn to the song sung at the reception, to the extent that I just had to search for the composer, and I still can't get it out of my head. I also thought Catherine Tate was excellent - a bit prejudiced not to watch the episode based on her comedy programme, which by the way I also enjoy.

Well I can't stand the woman, am a viewer of Dr Who and deliberately didn't want it because of her.

Funny how certain prejudices come into play, meaning that some good programmes might be missed. Sometimes I find it better to have an open mind wherever possible.

I prefer to the have the contents of my Christmas lunch in my stomach rather than watch a hideously annoying woman.

As regards good, judging by comments i've seen many would disagree with that.

Whatever .... but the DS poll on here currently stands at

Very poor 20
Poor 18
Average 37
Good 64
Very Good 128
Excellent 137

which appears to tell a slightly different story.

Has the DS poll ever given a bad rating of a Dr Who episode?

I doubt it, as most DW fans will say 'good' over average. In fact, having good and average separate is perhaps a bit misleading anyway. Considering very good and excellent probably mean the same thing.

I, for one, watched the first 15 minutes and then did something else, the family still watched it, but I cannot stand Catherine Tate, especially talking in the way she did.

It is reflecting those that vote - whereas the forum thread itself is reflecting those that post.

Or are you saying that the polls are always wrong and that the best indication of those that liked or disliked a programme is the number and type of thread comments? Or is it down to the results are wrong because they don't tally with what you believe?

Whatever, I was pointing out that the polls do tell a different story, but no-one really knows which is correct (or more accurate).
