Yet Another ipod Question!
Mambo Italiano
26-12-2006
I've put off buying (or asking for) an ipod for ages - mainly because I'm rubbish with anything vaguely technological. Hence this probably very easy to work out question .

I've been bought an ipod nano for Xmas; one of the 4GB, 1000 songs ones. I put three albums on it today - which seems to have used 1Gb of space! These albums together come to about 30 songs! Looking at the little colour bar (that comes up when you first plug in your ipod) I have the right amount of audio (which shows up as blue), and a whole load of orange stuff which is named "other". I have no idea what this is, as I've only (attempted to) put on the three albums I just said.

So - how do I get rid of this memory draining "other" stuff? What the hell is it? Should I "restore" and start again and see what happens?

(this will be the first of many ipod threads from me. When I opened it, I thought "oh lord, there's three months of me stressing to come")

The thing is when they say it holds 1000 songs it's a 1000 sounds u buy from itunes (nobodys stupid enough to do that) so they don't usally mean ur albums. I would just leave it and listen to what you want to.

Well, firstly it would seem to me that putting songs onto your ipod you are using the wrong file type. Only place mp3 files or Apple downloads onto your ipod.

These are generally in lower bit rate quality than other types of files.

Go into all your settings and make sure you use the 128 bit rate quality. Anything you import from CD`s will then be done at that bit rate. My daughter has the 4gb Ipod Mini and has over 800 files on it and still has space left.

The "other" you refer to is made up of a number of things. Do not allow album artwork, contacts from microsoft outlook, calendars or photo`s. These all take up extra space. If you want this, expect fewer tracks.

Also, enable hard disk mode on your IPOD and it will appear as a seperate drive in my computer. This will clearly display everything you have on your ipod. This is also an easy way to add/remove files.

But that's just the thing - I don't have any of those things on there. Unless it's automatic and I have to disenable it . Thank you for your other advice; I tihnk the best thing to do is clear it and start over. Other than that, I have no idea.
