Nokia 6230i - screen blanking/ cutting out?
Piazza

I've just got a brand new Nokia 6230i and I've had problems with it 'cutting out' when I'm using it - I could be writing a text and the screen will go black, then plain white, then back to my wallpaper, and start working normally again. I've done a search on here and found that a few other people have had the same or similar problems, is it worth taking the phone back or is it just something to put up with?

It's a bug in the phone's firmware. You could take it back but it's likely that the phone you'd get in exchange would have the same firmware. You can take it to a Nokia service centre and have the firmare updated for free, but if your phone currently has the latest firmware then there's not much they can do.

Type *#0000# into your phone's keypad, note the firmware version number (will be on the top line, starting V) and google it. Might give you some info on it

Thanks for the replies. After googling I've discovered that the latest firmware is v3.88 and I have v.3.80. I've seen a list of improvements that have been made to v3.88 but the crashing bug doesn't seem to be part of them. Is it still worth getting the firmware upgraded? I presume it's ok to take it to any Nokia service centre, not necessarily the one I bought it from? How long does it typically take, can it be done while I wait or will I be phone-less for a couple of days? Sorry for so many questions!

Yes it's probably worth getting the Firmware updated. You can take it to any Nokia Service Point - just take your receipt along. They usually tell you to come back in about an hour, that's all it takes

Or get a data cable and do it yourself.

Install the Nokia PC Suite. It is an option in there.

Edit: Whoops! Must have been thinking of something else. Look here for details of an OTA update:-

Apologies for bumping an old thread, but thought I'd update in case anyone else has/ had the same problem. I had the firmware upgraded and the fault was still there (Carphone Warehouse had clearly just upgraded the firmware and hoped that solved the problem, without doing any tests on it whatsoever, because when I turned the phone on it crashed immediately - and no, I didn't take it to the CW out of choice, it was the only service centre for 30 miles). So I had the phone exchanged at the O2 shop where I bought it and haven't had any problems since.
