Do I need a mobile phone to subscribe to TomTom plus?

Sorry, more TomTom questions!

I'd love to subscribe to the traffic service, but if I do, do I need to connect the tomtom to my phone when I'm on the road so it can access the internet? I've looked all over the site and can't seem to find a straight forward answer. Basically, I don't mind paying the £25 or so it is to subscribe but there's no way I want to have my phone online the whole time, it'd cost me a fortune! (or am I getting the wrong end of the stick?).

Also, just wondering how I set it to calculate the shortest routes rather than quickest (which it seems to do automatically). As it is set at the moment, it seems to be taking me around the world to get to certain places that I know are only 5 mins down the road so I wanted to try the shortest to see if that's any better.

THANK YOU in advance

As far as I know you need a GPRS enabled phone so that TomTom can access the data via the phone, so you'll pay for the subscription & the GPRS usage separately.
You only pay for the data you send & receive. Plus if your phone rings you can still have a conversation & keep the data link open.

To change the planning preferences (TomTom Classic):-
Tap the screen
Press Change Preferences
Press Arrow three times
Press Planning Preferences
Press the option you want
Press Done twice to return to main screen.

Thanks Jon I assume though that I will be 'sending & receiving' data which means I will have to pay? (my phone company).

Yes, you pay for amount of data sent & received not the length of time you are connected on GPRS. I believe you can set TomTom up to update the data at various times e.g. every 30mins, 1hr etc...
Unfortunately I can't tell you how to do this as my TomTom classic doesn't have this capabillity.

Thanks

I think I'll give it a miss then! I don't mind paying the £25 but I really don't want to start paying an amount I have no idea how much it will be each month! How annoying!
