CORRIE bosses want to move a Muslim family into the Street.

Producers hope to recruit a seven-strong Asian line-up to join the cast from April.

Insiders say soap chiefs will make the family Muslim if the right actors are found.

A show source said: “Producers want to introduce a new family to the Street and they think it would be brilliant if they are Muslim.

“It would also highlight issues facing Muslims in the country and promote racial awareness.

“Bosses have put out a casting notice to ask actors to put themselves forward.”

The ITV1 soap’s producers want two parents aged between 40 and 55, two grandparents aged above 60 and three children — two brothers and a sister between 17 and 25.

Street chiefs hope to find more Asian and black actors after Chris Bisson — cabbie Vikram Desai for four years — and Naomi Ryan, who played factory girl Bobbi Lewis, left the show.

A show spokeswoman said: “We are casting the net around for some new characters at the moment. They may not definitely be Muslim but will be Asian.

“This is in its very early stages and we are just seeing what is out there at the moment.”

There must be a lot of good Asian actors out there. Which really begs the question - why does Corrie always recruit the bad ones? I suppose Vic wasn't TOO bad, but he wasn't good, the girl in the shop is ok, but Dev IS bad, his uncle was bad, and the woman who played his aunt (served in the shop for a while) was just appalling. Tracy's rubbish too. When you think of all the talent that must be available to a show like Coronation Street, and the competition to get in there it really is unforgiveable.

SmokefreeGirl, I agree with you. Of all the soaps, I feel that overall Coronation Street has handled casting the worst of all recently - and that's saying something! I won't be holding my breath for a pleasant surprise - as you say, some of the actors cast recently have been less than professionally competant, and when they can't even cast the Witness Protection family with anything resembling aplomb, I can't help but think this idea is liable to fail miserably as well...

Do Corrination Street have a Quota of Ethinic Minorities they need to employ? Just because they have lost two Ethnic actors recently doesn't mean that they should rush out and replace them as soon as possible. That is probably why they've ended up with terrible actors in the past such as Dev as they just employ them for the sake of. They should take their time and get some proper actors in and work out their characters and some storylines for them and make it work.

Why do we need, muslim or asian actors in British soaps, just to be politically correct.

Keep CORRIE white......

Exactly. Corrie has received criticism in the past for not reflecting life. Just how likely is it that you never see a black person having a drink in the Rovers?

Away with you, haven't you got any holiday cottages to burn? Is the 'ry' in your name a typo?

It's not about political correctness, it's about reflecting the cultural & ethnic mix of the people who live in the general area where the soaps are set. What's wrong with that?

As for "Keep CORRIE white", haven't you ever watched the programme?

That is quite clearly a racist comment. Does anyone know how to report racist abuse on here?

Many people have - it's the 'alert' button. The comment above is clearly unacceptable and action has been taken.

I personally think that corrie are taking it a bit too far, putting 7 members into the muslim family. Fine maybe 2-4, but 7! thats stupid, cos as pistonbroke said, how on earth are they going to fit in a house?!

They will be the largest family in the street!

The Slaters in eastenders are 7 so why not i say!

Plus for a Pakistani family, 7 is very normal for them! I have one living two blocks away and they have 8! So there you go.

Oh dear. The trouble is that when soaps decide to tackle an "issue" it is almost always toe curlingly embarrassing or offensive. If this family are introduced foremost as a family moving to Weatherfield then it could be great - but if it's an attempt to patronise all concerned, I can't help thinking it will end in more sloppy soap plots.

For example, Eastenders lowest point, in my opinion, was when it went all "Ballykissenders" in Ireland. People were shocked at the portrayal that was being put across, and rightly so. It was racist and unpleasant. And very often, when the soaps are trying to be politically correct, the plot ends up as racist in the extreme - I'm not sure why...

Agree

If they intorduce them as a family then thats fine, but if they introduce them to just prove a point then forget it.

Eastenders is the only soap i can think of that made two asian characters household name, and by that i mean the lovely SANJAY AND GITA lol. They were wonderfull.............And they weren't introduce to make an issue, they felt like a proper couple if anyone knows what i mean.

I dont really care what race or religion the family are ...I just hope they get a better storyline than the most recent police protected one have had. Id almost forgotten they were there.
I think it was a mistake to bring in a new family in the middle of a big storyline ie the Richard one. Now they are thinking of bringing on a new asian family and the viewers havent really got to know the other ones yet.

The thing is...if they move into the street, which house are they going to live in?
I think the newer houses in the street are 3 bedroom, so perhaps Ashley moves out???

I too feel that they are introducing a Muslim family not because they have storylines and issues that they want to challenge, but because they think that they need to introduce more ethnic characters as they have lost two. By all means, introduce a muslim family, but only if they have good storylines for them and I hope it doesn't turn out that they will be introduced just to make up the numbers.
