Mobile phone being charged while switched on

I must one of the last people to have a mobile phone, I understand about charging it and I have no problem with that, but can anyone tell me if I keep the phone switched on while charging does it actually charge or is the charge being used for phone usage while switched on?

It still charges, just slower than if the phone was turned off.
