I am not 100%, but the upscaler will only work via the HDMI output, so yes you will need a HD TV

On a personal note, I have the Flagship DVD Denon A1 AVXA-P and will add that Denon DVD range is very good.

However, you might be better waiting for the PS3 which i believe
to be the cheapest Blu Ray HD-DVD on the market when it comes out in 3 months time.

Might be worth waiting until then...

I would buy a DVD player that will offer a good picture in 576p or 480p
from a standard DVD disc for best picture results if you do not have a HD screen yet.

I recently bought the Denon DVD-1930 for just under £200 and have found it to be a superb player for the price. No, it's not as good as my £1000 Denon DVD player but is a step up from budget category players.

Over the Samsung HD-850 you are getting DVD-A & SACD capability, Faroudja technology for the video engine and scaling up to 1080p through the HDMI.

I don't have any direct experience of the Samsung so can't make a valid comparison but having read reviews in the Home Cinema mags recently, I believe you will notice a marked difference in image sharpness & detail over all sub £150 players. The Denon DVD-1930 was also voted 2006 Product of the Year (& Best DVD player £200 - £500) by What Hi-Fi, though I hasten to add that I wasn't aware of this when I made my purchase.
