HD TV, Best cable connections to use ??
Hi all,
Ive just purchased a lovley Samsung 42" Plasma widescreen TV from Comet. Currently £899. The TV is "HD Ready", and the salesman in Comet tried to sell me a set of HD Component cables at £100 !. Of course i said no since i would like to research the subject first. He said i would need "Component cables" to get the best from my HD TV. Now was he talking rubbish, or was he right ?. At present i have regular Sky TV, and the Panasonic box only has a Scart out. It does not have Component outputs. The Phono audio outs go to my Dolby Pro Logic amplifier and audio kit. I have a DVD player that does have both Scart, and full Component level outputs. Again Audio phono outs go to my Prologic kit. And a VCR which only has Scart output. Now. Im guessing that at present i should stay with the Scart cables to connect everything up right ?. If and when i decide to go to Sky HD, i presume the new Sky HD box will have Component outputs ?. Only then should i move over to component cables. Am i on the right track here ? Thanks in advance. |

Pretty close
![]() Composite scart is fine for the VCR. RGB scart will do for the SKY digibox. You may want to try Component (no need for expensive cables) for the DVD player if it can output PAL progressive. The SKY+ HD has HDMI and Component which the HD Ready display will also support so even if you get SKY HD you can use the digital HDMI leaving the component for the DVD player. |

As for your HDMI leads, please do shop around, they charge around £30-80 and essentially do the same. Similar to the scart sockets to a certain extent.
However when I got my HD box, Sky provided HDMI leads and is more than adequate. But have a look on this forum and the AV Forums before going for the expensive and rather extravagent HDMI leads. |

Connect your Sky box using Scart.
Connect your DVD player using Component. Set your DVD player to Progressive Scan output (presumably it has this) Connect your Sky HD box when you get one using HDMI. Don't spend a fortune on cables. There's no need IMHO. Buy something well made, but reasonably priced. Plenty of decent low cost cables at places like Amazon. |

It isn't mandatory to deinterlace outside of the TV, in either DVD player or HD STB.
We are dealing with throughbacks to older solutions. Progressive was populer in areas where scart is not used. Hence the use of component, the premeir quality analog link outside of SCART using areas. The idea of progressive RGB SCART never saw the light of day. HD sets have to scale Sd, and the chips which do it might as well have deinterlcaing capability. The TV will deinterlace and scale ANY of it's inputs, how well can only be shown by trying. So don't got thinking you need to get an SD scaling progressive scan DVD player for you new HD Ready set. Try you old DVD player using RGB and turn on the sets deinterlacing. |
