Megadeath, Slayer and Machine Head would have meant nothing to the fans of Maiden in the old days. "Machine Head"? was just an album by Deep Purple.

I should know, as I was a demin-clad teenager who moved on to adding an army-surplus jacket and a crash helmet to the ensemble. Rush, Status Quo and Van Halen were on the fringes (despite Quo being the original head-bangers' band) as were the true prog-rock bands like Yes, Pendragon, Marillion, Pink Floyd etc. the British HM scene thought itself independent of the US scene - and only the best US rockers were accepted - Lynerd Skynerd (despite their 'country' sound), Mountain, Alice Cooper and in particular Van Halen. Graham Bonnet, Ronnie James Dio and various others were only grudgingly included.

Hawkwind, Uriah Heep and (one of my favorites) Blue Oyster Cult would probably make the set.

Iron Maiden were one of those HM bands that had what it took to last.

Well Maiden were part of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal movement, so like other bands such as Sabbath and Zeppelin, they'll always be popular over here amongst metal fans. I think the fact that they've remained consistently popular in virtually every continent shows their staying power, and how they had that little something else.

I personally liked AMOLAD - it has a few very good tracks on there, and I think it's their best album since Brave New World.

I like The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg though
