Hi. At the moment we have a "home cinema" type Pioneer DVD player with the usual 5 small speakers and a big box thing (yes, I know I'm not qualified to type here!) Anyway, it's about 8 years old and has started to go wrong and I'm looking to replace it with a DVD recorder.

Do any of them give anything like the surround sound that we get from our current system, or is that wishful thinking? I know that all the manufacturers claim they give that "virtual" surround sound, but we have got a Hitachi tv that claims that, and it doesn't sound anything like the full system. I'm not looking to spend an absolute fortune, and am not bothering with that HD stuff (blu-ray or whatever) but the sound is important.

Any advice would be gratefully received. Ta, Moose.

you cant get one at the moment. get one with a hard drive and then you record the programme without burning it to disc. then simply delete it or store it.

sony rdr-hxd860 for me with 160gb for me

you can send sound through your existing dvd player for surround sound or buy sony str-da1200es to match and enjoy the sound

The problem is that most of these integrated DVD/Surround Amps only decode DVD's, not surround from external sources.

I thought I had seen one and this one from Panasonic would do what you ask. It's currently available at Unbeatable for £483.

Personally, i would look for a reasonable DVD recorder, nice AV amp and a set of speakers but it depends on budget of course.

Good luck.

You havent said what bit is going wrong - is it the DVD playing or the amp part? If the amp is Ok and it accepts inputs from external sources, buy either a twin tumer PVR with large HDD and connect this up for surround sound or get a Freeview DVDR (with/without) Hdd and connect this.

The decision really comes down to you wanting to do time shifting (PVR) or record/archive longterm (DVDR).

Hi all, thanks for all the hints and tips, sorry I'm not as quick at replying as you lot are!

The sound has started skipping or hanging badly on several discs including brand new ones, I've tried a lens cleaner and it's made no difference, and as it's getting old I thought it might be beyond economic repair and it would be worth looking around for a replacement.

We've got Sky+, albeit only the little one, but I would like to be able to archive some of that stuff to disc as and when we fancy it.

Cheers again for all your help folks, Moose

Niall, Have you not looked at some of the links on this thread ? At least 2 of them are for DVD recorders with integrated surround sound.

Both the LG's hav an opitcal input, so I would expect them to accept an external device.

Thanks again for all the input folks, it was dead useful and I can't believe how much info people came up with so quickly. I'm pretty sure I've found what I'm after now, bearing in mind (unfortunately) what I can afford to spend...

I was looking at the Panasonic SCRT30EBS, but I have to confess we thought it looked terrible, a bit like a chunky betamax vcr from the 70's (that's shown my age, and I hope I haven't offended anyone who's got one!) I think I'm going to go for the LG LH-RH361SE. It's got a 160GB HDD and will read and write on just about any DVD, and unlike it's big brother the 760IA it's got little speakers (still 300w I think) so the missus won't be moaning about me taking over the sitting room!

I'm sure there will be a few peole screaming "LG?" at the screen in disbelief - I wasn't sure myself to start with, but they seem to have done ok on the reviews I looked at, and I have to be able to pay for it as well.

Anyway, sorry if that rattled on a bit, just wanted to say thanks and let you know what I'd gone for. Cheers, Moose.

Don't place all your eggs in one basket!.

Buy a DVD recorder and a separate surround sound amp, far better idea!.
