You mean HDMI.

I find it hard to recommend the sony bravias. The picture just isnt impressive for what they cost (£600 for a 26" ??).

Get the Toshiba or a samsung R7 model.

For the true quality your are expecting to get, I can only point you towards the SHARP XD1 (eg, LC-37XD1E). Its got "FullHD" technology, which includes the next step up in screen resolution of 1,920x1,080), as well as the ability to display the newer 1080p image format (output from BlueRay players and PS3). Also offers 2 HDMI input sockets, and extra technology to make SD pictures look as they can do.

I would still strongly recommend a HighDef box as well though, such as a SkyHD box or a Freetoair HighDef satellite decoder (eg, Humax).

I had a look at the Sharp today and I was impressed with the picture quality but are you saying I would need SkyHD for best picture or would it be not far off with just Sky digital

Normal Sky Digital or Sky+ is SD picture quality, and while the tv will upscale the signal from these decoders, the end result will never match a High Def signal. Some tv's do a better job at this upscaling than others - but at the end of the day, a HD Ready screen or a FullHD Ready screen is such a high resolution [compared with normal CRT], that every minor bug in a SD picture will be visible on the screen [on a SD screen the image is lower resolution and hides much of this]. I guess what I am saying is that SD on a HighDef screen is ok, but its waste of money if you never get round to putting a High Def signal into it.

Cheers Dave so a HD ready would be better than a full on HD set?

The new generation of Sony Bravia LCD's are far superior to the previous generation so you might find different views on Sony LCDs depending on which models they are talking about.

I recently bought a 40" Bravia (KDL-40W2000) and it's great. This model was Which Hi-Fi's TV of the year in 2006.

Following on from the above, I'd like a new TV to replace an old 32" CRT. Planning for 37" or 42" tops.

I have no plans to use any HD source in the foreseeable future (and when I do, the relevant TVs will have increased spec and lower prices, so no need to be future-proof).

What would be the best flat screen for viewing SD pictures, given that SD on an HD TV can look sad?

Should I go for LCD or plasma?

Would a (much cheaper) non-HD TV be better than HD ready or full HD?

Thanks,

William
