Digital portable TV's
Have decided to purchase a new portable TV for the kitchen and, with only a couple of years before the analogue service is being switched off in some areas, I decided to get a digital LCD - only I can't.
There seem to be very very few made and those that are are out of stock. What's going on - why would anybody want to buy an analogue TV when it will be obsolete in the next four years? Oh and does anybody have any recommendations for indoor aerials that actually work? Many thanks if so. |

These won't be obsolete as such, because you can simply get a cheap set top box and plug it in. Bingo, a working TV.I think you'd be best getting a cheap 14" portable CRT jobbie, since LCD picture quality is quite shite in my opinion. It's horrible, soft and just yukky - I can't really put my finger on what it is, but it's just horrible. Of course, when you have HD video and a HD ready panel it comes into its own but SD on an LCD is rather nasty. |

I like CRTs too, but I have noticed this:
http://www.play.com/Electronics/Elec...V/Product.html I saw it in Woolies for more, and it looked pretty reasonable. You're right though, even though it's HD ready, there's sadly no sign of a digital tuner! Last edited by Captain Cod : 02-01-2007 at 17:06. |

Wharfedale make a 17inch LCD with built in Freeview, and I think there are one or two others as well now. But prices start from about £350.
While I agree that overall SD pictures like Freeview dont look great on LCD, with the smaller screens the problems might not be visible. Dave |

If you are short on space this TV aerial will be good for digital on a portable TV if you are not in a weak DTT area.
http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...2Bboosters.htm TV in my bedroom is conected to a wideband aerial in the loft for the DTT signal. http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...er/5341829.htm We also got a high gain aerial outside the house for the TV in the living room thats due to be replaced anytime soon. Price on the argos site is down almost £15 from when we got it just over 3 years ago for the outside of the house and it also cost us £25 at the time if I remember to get someone to fit it to the outside of the house for us. http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...er/5352069.htm Darren Last edited by ney : 02-01-2007 at 22:27. |

Maplins sell a selection of 10" and bigger freeview (DVB) ready LCD tv screens.
http://www.maplin.co.uk/search.aspx?...Menu=y&doy=2m1 There are also a selection of hand held units available but are fairly expensive for what you get. DNZ711 Last edited by DNZ711 : 02-01-2007 at 22:30. Reason: Typo |

Gotta agree with the picture quality on small LCDs being crap compared to CRTs. I'm looking to upgrade my 14" kitchen based portable with a 20-23" LCD but cannot mentally validate spending £400-500 for potentially a worse picture.
What's the problem about a freeview settop box? Some are the size of a book, stand next to the TV taking up minimal room and start around £20. Last edited by Buelligan : 02-01-2007 at 23:31. |
