Leaving HC, how long to transfer ADSL?
Hi,
I didn't get offered 4 months, so am just going to stick with Freeview when I get my new TV. My main thing is not having any particular downtime when moving my ADSL across. I will be away when HC cancels, do I need to wait for the disconnection before organising a new ADSL provider? Thanks |

about 4 weeks
or 14 days to be disconnected and another 14 days to be reconnected to another isp i dont think homechoice gives out a mac (different hardware installed in the exchange i think) but having one downtime is within a few hours to swap isp's and thats around 12-14 days |

I've just migrated from HC to Orange broadband (I know what you are thinking but it's free!!!)
Although HC no longer issue MAC codes, I must say that HC are very good at 'releasing' the line quickly. My line was free for a new provider the day after the my one months notice finished. The delay for me was waiting for the new provider to provosion and install thier service on the line which took about 14 days. Overall I'm happy I made the jump despite this downtime. |

Unless you can find a company willing to give you an exact day that the engineer will be available to hook you back up to the BT kit or to their own kit (Orange are LLU in some exchanges too now) you'll have to suffer some down time.
Personally I think my internet browsing will end up going through a T-Mobile HSDPA connection during mine. |

Yup, my Orange data charges were significantly higher during my 'downtime'. You only have to leap once as almost all other providers issue MAC codes...

www.mynow.co.uk - they do a 30 day money back guarantee on their wireless service (available in parts of london) - so you could try to use this service while you've got no ADSL.
but shhhh, don't tell anyone... |

Thanks for all the replies. Okay, if I time this right, I can leave just before I go on holiday at the end of the month. The 14 days reconnection won't really matter then.
HC quoted me 30 days to quit, but I believe they got this wrong. What's my minimum time? I'm also having difficulty beating the ADSL deal, as I want a fast connection with near unlimited downloads. Virgin Plus One is 40GB at £24.99 a month. |

Checked what you can get with http://www.samknows.com ?
Seems unikely if you can get Homechoice that you couldn't get Be or UKOnline, both of which are potentially faster than Homechoice offer at present. |

Sadly, it will be 30 days as the agreement between you and Homchoice clearly states that 30 days notice is required even when you are out of your 12 month contract. I would book the holiday for 2 days after HC disconnects. This will allow time to order your new service after they have cleared the line!!

Ofcom are looking at the issue (apparently it never occurred to them that LLU customers would ever want to swap providers) |

from my past knowledge the biggest issues with mac codes is actually getting bt to carry out their part satisfactorily which causes the screw ups, which is why some companies have ditched the process

I'm curious as I've never heard anything like that. I don't see how a migration is any more subsceptible to misconfiguration or misjumpering than a cease / reprovide and I've certainly not heard of ISPs stopping using the MACs apart from cases where they don't want to give them as they don't want customers to leave and often use big bad BT as an excuse for other things so use them again. |

MACs don't cause this kind of problem. The only side affect of succesfully usign a MAC is that the old ISP continues to bill you as they miss your migration off one of their reports! I have heard that if an ISP uses BTs the new EMP system for provisioning, they are able to migrate customers without using a MCA code. Anyone else know about this? |
