BBC1 took chunks out of its early evening schedule when it gave viewers a taste of the 2007 Great British Open. The coverage peaked at 6 million viewers, brushing rival programmes aside, including part of ITV's strong line-up. 'Emmerdale' lost out with 5.2 million viewers, compared to BBC1's 5.6 million viewers. However, 'Coronation Street' recovered reasonably well, with 7.2 million viewers, knocking aside the golf competition.
Later on, ITV1 dominated the primetime hours with the Yorkshire 1960s drama, 'Heartbeat', achieving 6.6 million viewers, and 'The Commander' pulling in 5.5 million viewers. BBC1 could hardly compete, with ill-fated drama, 'The Chase', getting 3.7 million viewers. A repeat of 'Waking the Dead' only managed 3.5 million viewers, suggesting BBC1's current policy of constant repeating is wearing off.
Controversial gay film, 'Clapham Junction', scored over the 1 million mark, while BBC2's finale of 'Rome' got a steady 2.2 million viewers. BBC News at 10:15pm won its ratings battle with 5.2 million viewers, while ITV1's 'News Knight' with Sir Trevor McDonald managed a respectable 3 million viewers.
