Doesn't surprise me. It never does very well.

It's really quite boring. I've given up watching it live now and just fast forward a lot of it.

Shame really, because it should be a great evening celebrating good film.

Glad to see Shipwrecked doing well - 9.7m at 6.30pm, according to Channel4Sales(!)

I think it's safe to assume they meant 970,000, which is not quite as good...

Absoloutly - incredibly dull. However last year it averaged 3 million for it's first hour, so it did go up by nearly a million this year.

I see Trial and Retribution got its best audience so far this series on Monday (6.7m) against BBC1's abject surrender of a New Tricks repeat - rapidly becoming the Only Fools & Horses-type schedule-filler du jour (4.3m)

Well done BBC1 for nobbling Life on Mars before it even starts, by giving T&R a clear run last night. Life on Mars should have blown T&R out of the water tonight. Instead, I reckon it will be pretty close - 6.6m to LoM and 6.3m to T&R.

BBC4 could get its biggest ever audience though right now for ep 2 - reckon it will be >1m.

Its a bit daft putting it on an 8 week run on Tuesday nights just when the Champions League is about to return. Choice between football or Life on Mars?

I'm more disappointed that your prediction was so far off. I thought I could rely on you for next weeks lottery numbers

This was down on the channel's slot average for last year of 6.5 million (26.5%).
The modest audience for Life on Mars was made more all the more surprising by the fact that it had a strong lead-in from the preceding Holby City. The long running hospital drama at 8pm took 7.1 million (30.1%) over an hour.

Trial and Retribution on ITV1 at 9pm

The Verdict on BBC2 at 9pm

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Life on Mars on BBC4 at 10pm

This was the channel's third highest ever audience.

EastEnders on BBC3 at 10pm

Sport Uncovered on Sky One at 10pm
60,000
0.37%

The Grammy Awards on ITV2 at 10pm

Why are BBC1 putting it on Tuesday nights? I presume it is predominately watched by young(ish) males. Wont they watch the footie, either on Sky or ITV on Tuesday nights between 9-10pm?

yes average is somewhere about 1.2m - 1.5m. on a par with Ch4 at that time which had 2m for Richard & Judy, but less than Neighbours at 2.7m (17%) and Weakest Link at 3.5m (21.4%)

Because BBC1's scheduling department has taken leave of its senses?

As I pointed out the other day, they nobbled LoM's chances by shifting Waking the Dead to next week to accomodate the minority-audience BAFTAs ceremony in a prime slot on Sunday. Had they kept WTD where it was, T&R would have pulled a lower opening night audience than it did (maybe 5-5.5m) and that would have reduced the audience tuning in for part 2 due to natural wastage.

Also, Tuesday 9pm is when Ch5 gets its strongest audience for CSI which pulls a loyal audience.

In the circumstances, 5.7m isn't too awful and not a million miles below what I expected it to get - I thought it would be in the 6's and no more than that.

But it should be on Mondays, less competition and a large audience available at 9pm due to EE and Coro St earlier (even tho Coro is on another channel, the viewers are still there in front of the box). Maybe they will shift it back as a result of last night's flop.

It will improve next week I guess, but 5.7m is a massive disappointment.

In the meantime, where do I apply for the possibly soon-to-be-vacant BBC1 scheduling post?!

I'm not sure it will TBH. CSI, Champions League and the fact that nearly 1m have already seen the episode on BBC4 should mean it stays at or about the same level.

Is it me or would LoM work well on Fridays at 9pm?
