Emmerdale averaged 6.8 million viewers and a 31% share of the audience between 7.00-8.00pm last night, yet when it was against EastEnders from 7.30pm onwards it dipped to 6.2 million viewers and 27% share of the audience while EastEnders had 7.3 million and a 32% share. 1 million viewers and a 6% share for the 10.00pm repeat on BBC THREE is excellent news as well. EastEnders altogether had 8.3 million viewers and a 40% audience share last night then. |

For a qualifier? I know it was a crucial game but a peak that high? I expect it was a high average though.

The football goes to sixth in the year's top 10, behind Britain's Got Talent and ahead of EastEnders. |

Very strong ratings, unsurprisingly. I'm A Celeb held by very well indeed. I expect the 90 minute running time helped, as its ratings would have shot up once the footy ended.
Of course it's going to be very interesting for ITV1 and BBC1 next year, with no England in the tournament. ITV1 will be hit hard as I expect they were banking on Euro 2008 to bring them huge ratings. |

Although the Scottish FA were suggesting a home nations tournament which would be fantastic, and be a much bigger thing in this country than Euro 2008 in the summer. Who would have rights for it? Presumably the BBC would have the rights for the England and Northern Ireland home matches, while Sky would have Scotland's and Wales's? Or would it not be part of those deals and would be a seperate contract? Hopefully they would include the Republic of ireland too. |

Presumably it would be up for grabs rights wise were it to happen (although it would depend on how it was structured). The timing would be difficult. It would have to be squeezed in before the Euro 2008 tournament. I suspect though it wont happen, and that England and others may end up playing in friendlies the US or Far East where the commercial opportunities are greater.
As for the contract - this was from the BBC Press release in 2003: 'All England Home Senior Internationals - competitive and friendly - will be exclusively live on BBC, with highlights and delayed broadcast on Sky Sports until the end of the 2007/8 season' - so surely that would have to include this? Of course having it as a seperate tv deal would make it rather more attractive to the FA. |

EE is looking dangerously close to not making the top 10 shows of the year. Not great figures for I'm a celeb but expected.

No they wont. Even the lesser matches will rate better than the normal summer diet of repeats & reality tv.
so your telling me ITV will move programmes such as emmerdale, corrie, the bill etc to make way for a 7pm game involving Austria?? they'd be silly if they did, like the rugby world cup, the unimportant games that kick of at 7pm will be booted to BBC2 or the digital channels. |

They will do, just like they do for every other major tournament. The World Cup involves plenty of small teams and theres matches that dont have any relevance to England - but they still pulled in great ratings. Mexico v Iran for example, nearly 5m at 5pm one Sunday afternoon, USA v Czech Rep a similar rating at the same time on a monday. Meanwhile Germany v Poland had nearly 9m and Brazil v Croatia had 10m in the evening, and these were just group games.
of course it will still get decent audiences, and obviously the 3pm and 5pm games will still be on the main channels as theyd get more viewers than repeats of midsummer murders or whatever else is on at those times. also dont forget how multi-channel has grown since Euro2004. I think the ITV in particular would be stupid not to put some games on ITV4, where it would still get good ratings (as the rugby world cup showed) but without disrupting ITV1's schedule. |

Re Euro 2008 - note that the entire event is a Crown Jewels LIST A category event - ie every game has to be live on terrestrial TV.
BBC can show games on BBC2 but if BBC/ITV wish to show games on channels other than BBC1/BBC2/ITV1 then they will have to apply to OFCOM for permission. OFCOM may well grant this BUT there would be a downside. There would then be a strong argument for the entire Euro Finals and World Cup finals being taken off the List A (except for games involving home nations). BBC and ITV will not be keen on that as it would mean Sky could win exclusive rights to games at future tournaments (other than home nations games). The problem for BBC and ITV is they can't have it both ways. Either games not involving home nations are important enough to be on terrrestrial TV or they don't warrant being on list A. |

England's World Cup penalty shootout against Portugal didn't get that!
