Not good scheduling for either show really.

Ashes will walk it. The hype that has built up around Life on Mars will see to that. New fans are being converted all the time thanks to DVD, reruns and word of mouth. The LOM DVDs are UK best sellers.

Question is will the viewers (and me) tune in for episode 2? Because I'm a best 50/50 on the idea right now.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NRS_social_grade

basically refers to social class (but from an advertising perspective it really refers to income)

ABC1's being higher earners, C2DE's being lower earners who are less attractive to advertisers. Shows that deliver good numbers in ABC1's or 16-34 year olds but get otherwise average numbers can sometimes get renewed as they deliver a good profile to advertisers.

I have always wondered about this.

Does it not depend on your product?

If you are selling, say, Turkey Twizzlers, surley a high C2DE audience would be better?

ABC1 are income groups. Richest to poorerst as follows:

A, B, C1, C2, D, E

C1 and C2 would be upper and lower middle class in old terms.

Most UK households are either C1 or C2.

ITV have no problem attracting C2DE viewers! Try the Jeremy Kyle show for starters.

Well I'm not surprised Waking The Dead got around 3 million viewers, it was a repeat showing of a story from last year..

Dissapointing ratings for The Palace though.

I'm surprised BBC One chose to repeat another 'Waking the Dead' story. I know new episodes have always rated really well, but they should have learnt from the awful repeat figures last summer.

I prefer these!

A = The Queen
B = Anybody who foxhunts or plays croquet
C1 = Jumped-up clerks and other assorted uppity Daily Mail reading riff-raff
C2 = Coal Miners
D = Criminals and other general Scum
E = Those whose views we couldn't give a collective ***** about, especially "horrid old people".

Not good but I think thats the way Channel 4 wanted it to be. They clearly didn't want to air a series in January at all and only had to because of the contracts. They wanted it "low key". Still, thats no real excuse.

Especially with all the new shows they must be stockpiling.

I can only assume that ahead of the impending cutbacks they are "watering down the beer" so to speak, and spinning things out across the year.

They will if

a) Episode 1 looks promising

b) People are sufficiently enthused/intrigued by the concept to keep watching

Does Shameless get a good rating on e4 first look? Because if not, those figures are quite bad.

Its a better rating than last week, which was 2.2, I think... Loks like it will settle around this level, which is a given for such a long running show...

Also what's so bad about 2.3 mll? ITV could only muster just over a mill more for their 'prime' offering... now that is bad!

Last series of Shameless got between 2.6 - 3 mill per episode it think, so it is running a bit down on that...

Might be down to the ITV news I guess

Does Hollyoaks always get about 2M? It seems quite good for it, considering they also show the next episode on E4 straight afterwards!

I was going by last years ratings, because they are down. I would think that e4 gets quite a lot for a new look episode though which would obviously have an effect.

Just checked barb and its been getting about 600,000 for the frist look, so its nigh on 3 mill total viewers... I think C4 will be happy with that....

As long as it hold above 2 mill for the c4 screening then I think there'll be another series, as its a solid performer...

I think people are drifiting from it tho as it has fallen into a formula... I love it, of course, and will watch it to the very end, but it is a bit more soapy and safe (if ever that was applicable to Shameless!) because it has been as shocking/edgy as it can ever be...

Its still very funny tho and that's enough reason to keep watching...
