Well of course they're going to treat it better, this is FIVE we're talking about here. A channel that relies on imports to achieve any kind of ratings success.

I would blame FIVE for failing to provide any worthwhile content over the last 10 years. My Nan still insists FIVE are a late 90's Pop act.

It could well be 6? I know many a snob who have recently discovered the red button interactive service. My Nan is always harping on about those 'entertainment updates' on BBCi

TBH, Five does do good documentary series, has very good US imports, and has a good weekend schedule. But other than that, Five is just a bit bland. It is my least watched channel in my house, not because we refuse to watch anything other than BBC1 and ITV1 (we usually watch BBC2 or C4), but it just doesn't show "it".

I do think that I would notice Neighbours more on Five because BBC1 never advertised it what so ever, which was very bad. That is why it went into decline. Five would keep advertising it.

Ashes to Ashes got 7 million 29% share.

Looks like the BBC had a very good night.

five: 4.2%, five life: 0.3%, five us: 0.5%

Sky One: 0.7%

I presume these are all-day shares. BBC ONE had an eight-point lead over ITV1, due in part to the football.

I notice that Channel 4's sales website add together the figures for their timeshift +1 channels to the main channel, but don't apply the same flattery to ITV's and five's +1 channels.”

So sky 1 was beaten by E4, ITV2 & ITV3, drew with BBC3 and only just beat Film 4, Five US and More 4. I guess Sky1 isn't the must turn to non terrestrial entertainment channel anymore.

It will be interesting to see what the last ever BBC1 episode of Neighbours gets today.

I recorded it and watched Buzzcocks instead. Interesting that it equalled the success of the first episode of LoM, didn't expect that I must say. The share was actually a little higher:

Life on Mars (S1E01) - 9th Jan 06 - 7 million (27% share)
Ashes to Ashes (S1E01) - 7th Feb 08 - 7 million (29% share)

ITV1 competition

Soapstar Superstar - 9th Jan 06 - 6 million (25% share)
Trial & Retribution - 7th Feb 08 - 5.1 million (21% share)

Well done Ashes! It was very good too!

ITV has now now not won a single 9pm slot this week, and with the way NEw Tricks is perofmring probably won't win tonight... A very good showing from the beeb!

I think ITV1 should probably recomission it - its the type of programme that will grow its audience if its on for long enough and it would be useful for them to have.

Interesting that The Bill seems to back ahead of Waterloo Road. However, I don't think Waterloo Road's audience has declined - it consistently draws between 4.5-5 million viewers. Rather, The Bill has seen a rise in its audience this year of about 0.5 million viewers.

This is because the structure of the series has changed. Now an 8 part story which is a lot more appealing to viewers, especially fans.

Ashes to Ashes did do very well. I think they will be pleased with that and it probably justifies the decision to go for Thursdays. In any case, its a lot better off in that slot than on a tuesday up against Champions League in the coming weeks which was the fate Life on Mars suffered in its second series.

Good result for 'Ashe to Ashes'. I can see both that and 'Trial & Retribution' getting around 6.3m next week though; T&R usually increases again for the first part of the two parter.

Bad news for ITV1 to be below 20% or even 19% of the audience on two weekdays running. Multichannel obviously had the biggest jump, up 6% on Thursday from Wednesday.

Not really, ITV 1 has been consistently getting 18-19% (excluding Saturdays) for the duration of this year which is more or less holding on to last years share. BBC 1 has taken as sharp rise above 26% in places but primarily because of the FA Cup, Six nations and international games which will al end in the second half of the year.

I'm sure recently its been something like 21%-22% for BBC ONE with ITV1 getting 20%-21%. I think there was quite a bit of attention paid when ITV1 had better all-day shares than BBC ONE and got up to a high of 21% with BBC ONE on 19%-20%. If anything BBC ONE is pulling ahead of ITV1 now by 8% on Wednesday and 5% on Thursday; ITV1 need to at least narrow the gap to around 1-2%.
