Oh.. I thought that Battlestar would have had higher ratings that. Anyone know how Nip/Tuck did on Monday?

My prediction over Christmas that EastEnders was unlikely to hit 10m on more than a handful of occasions during 2007 seems to have worked wonders for its ratings!

I know this has probably been asked many times before

But what do the 'Reach' percentages mean

I think it's something to do with the percentage of potential viewers that watch a channel during any particular week; for a certain time period (15 minutes I think - can anybody confirm this?).

Potential viewers are the viewers (aged 4+) that have access to TV reception (analogue/digital/cable/satellite and maybe online?). Some people don't have a TV so I think it's about 97% of the UK population, or so.

Hope this helps.

PS I think 'Reach' is particularly valued by news channels due to nature of their output in particular.

That quite low though. Look at BBC1 and Channel 4's reach.

I think I understand, Thanks

So if we look at BBC1 (rounded to be easier), during the week

85% of people with a tv watched some of BBC1
15% didnt watch any BBC1 (or 12% if 97% of the population has a tv)

So how does this fit in with BBC getting a 25% share

Does the following sound about right, or am i way out

Reach is a % of the (tv owning) poulation watching the channel
Share is a % of people choosing this channel over another

Yes pretty much right, but with reach it has to be for a certain amount of time ie 1 minute wouldn't count, I think. I think it is for 15 minutes. I also think the same thing applies to share too.

Share is simply the amount of viewing time for a particular channel, divided by the total viewing across all channels in any particular week (or month or year).

For example, let's go back to 1983 (when there were only 4 channels) if ITV was watched for a total of 4 hours during a particular week and the total viewing across all channels was 10 hours, then ITV's audience share would be 40%. Reach and share are inter-related although the exact correlation can be a bit tricky at times. That's why sometimes a channel can have a larger reach than another channel, but still have a lower share (or vice versa).

These days, things are really complicated as there are different platforms (Satellite/DTT etc) and different types of viewers. It really is melon twisting stuff.

Hope this helps, though you're now probably more confused then ever??

Many thanks, Its starting to sink in (a little)

I think I willl take more notice of the Share, The Reach figure seems a little too complicated (especially when looking at both figures)

Glad to be of service.

If you have a good look through the BARB.s (www.barb.co.uk) then this will help too. I find the ratings very interesting myself (maybe I should get out more ).

Cheers, I will have a good read through Barb, I occasionaly look at it, but not to often

They are interesting to see, but I sometimes avoid the ratings threads because some people go OTT (thinking about the one in the soaps forum)
