I think Top Gear is now firmly established as a ratings juggernaut - 6m is fantastic for BBC2 on a night when the BBC News would usually expect a bumper audience.

Good stuff for Comic Relief and an 11m+ audience for the final Dibley appearance. Bet Chris Evans has never had 11m viewers before!

Oh i liked blue murder a lot - these are going to be new episodes right? I've seen all the ones on ITV to date.

And from the ITV ad's and the hype look like Mobile will be very good too.

Here is the overnight rating for 1999, 2001, 2005 and 2003 Comic Relief so you can compare it:

1999: averaged 8.2 million (34.5 per cent share) between 7pm till 9pm (to make way for the Nine O'Clock News) , peaking at 9.8 million viewers

2001: averaged 9.1 million (47 per cent) between 19.00 and 01.00

Between 7pm and 10pm
2003: 11.6 million viewers and attracted a 46% share, peaked at 13.9 million viewers at 8.15pm

2005: 10.8 million viewers and attracted a 45% share, peaking with 12.9 million (61.5%) at 9.30pm

2007: 9.52 million viewers and attracted a 41% share

So the largest audience for the 3 rugby games yesterday went to the one that had no influence over the outcome of the championship. Curious!

The Eurovison nonsense did better than I expected it would considering DoI was somewhat overlaping.

Primeval seems to have founds its level at 6m plus 1m for the Sunday repeat. Not bad but not earth shattering either.

ITV still insist on starting chat shows too early in the evening. Surely Al Murray & Dame Edna are meant to start post 10pm. They always seem much better programmes if you have had a few drinks.

I got it right! I predicted The Dame Edna Treatment would get 3.5 million viewers and an 18% audience share - it got 3.5 million viewers and a 17.4% audience share.

Curious how the skate off shed 1.2 million viewers from the main show. I would have thought the idea was to see who won, although perhaps if their favourite had been ousted they may not have wanted to watch.
It would seem DOI is going to be a fixture for years to come and dominate the ratings in this segment of the year. I wonder if the BBC regrets not following up the format more after being the first in showing an ice dancing celeb competition as a one-off.

Yes that's very odd.

Maybe the system that measures ratings is as dodgy as those phone in competitions etc.

Expect ratings will fall next week as the reaction to this show appears to be mediocre.

Its the same with Strictly Come Dancing - the first hour of dancing is more popular than the results show later in the evening. Its probably because some of the audience either watch it before going out on a Saturday night as well as some of the younger viewers who are probably in bed by about 9.30pm or whenever.

And I sincerely hope not - Dancing On Ice is a pale imitation of Striclty Come Dancing. It was one of the most popular programmes of 2006 but it seems to have fallen slightly this year. I hope it goes - there is only one Strictly Come Dancing and that will continue for years - there is a real hub of excitement about SCD that DOI lacks.

Sorry if this has been asked before but how do they actually measure viewing figures?

I agree.

SCD is an "Event".. DOI is just another reality phone in show to me.

I distinctly remember that Ali G's classic interview with Posh & Becks ("Has he started talking properly yet?" "No, not Brooklyn, David"...) pulled 15m viewers - and in a post 10pm slot too, which is why it stuck in my mind. Can't remember what year that was though - 2001?

A quick search reveals it was 2001, but it was 11.9m viewers not 15m. Sure I recall it reported as 15m. Still good for a late night audience!

Whats the point?

So anybody think that Mansfield Park will hit the 10m mark for ITV last night? Castaway plus a list show on 4 dont exactly draw in big numbers so ITV could score big this time.

8m max, more probably around 7m i reckon. Still it should do well... Castaway well probably lose a few more viewers - maybe around 2.5m. It's been a bit of a turkey for BBC3 too - Thursday night's edition managed only 99,000 .

Just what I was going to ask.
How did the chef do this week?

I do not know why BBC ONE chose to bring Castaway back at all. Its clearly going to be an embarassing flop - I think the reason is that the current channel controller had something to do with the original programme in 2000?

ITV1 is making progress in its drama recently - Mansfield Park, Mobile and Primeval are all well-made and more distinctive than the usual ITV fare.

Well we haven't seen this yet (Mobile) but your right i'd say from the ad's alone this will be very good indeed.

I will definatley tune in tonite at 9pm anyway.I think it will do very well and definatley beat BBC's footie.

Peter Fincham (BBC1 Controller) was in charge of Talkback in 2000, Castaway was, and is, made by Lion TV. So he wasn't involved at all.

5.9m for Mansfield Park on ITV1. Considering that Castaway, a very obscure doc on 2, and a list show was on 4 at the same time thats on the poor side of average.

It got 2.4m (10% share) last night. So it has shed about 500,000 in one week.
