Is that not "arrogance"? Problem for ITV1 is that most of its successes come about when BBC1 has nothing much on to compete - ie, a New Tricks umpteenth showing. People increasingly seem to watch ITV1 only when there's nothing else on... (to paraphrase GeorgeS)

Its like saying EastEnders and Coronation Street are the same just because the both feature a pub in them. |

Its impressive how Benidorm held up. I was expecting figures to drop to around 5m. I think figures will continue to slide over the series and it will settle for about 5.5m. It will be interesting when My Family goes up against it on Friday, although strictly speaking they aren't really aimed at the same audience so both could do well.

![]() In fact all four shows on BBC One and ITV1 between 9pm and 10 on Friday evenings will have narrative repeats at various times.

Looks like Channel 4 still have big problems on Friday night - Dirty Sexy Money looks likely to slump below a million viewers next week, and the Friday Night Project's ratings were lacklustre, especially considering Mariah Carey was the co host.

As for the BBC vs ITV comedy zone, I think HIGNIFY should be shown at 9.30pm because it used to be shown at 10pm when it was still on BBC2. |

Ouch for CH4! They obviosuly want DSM to do well, still promoting it on ITV1 last night, and it still only pulls in 1 million viewers with the first chance episodes only pulling 0.2 million viewers. There's still 7 more episodes left aswell, I never thought it would be that much of a flop! I suspect Friday Night Project is performing poorly because of the poor inheritance from DSM, because it pulled in around 1.7 million up against DSM's first episode of 2.7 million.
It's been a while since ITV1 have led a Friday evening-wth repeats and flops in the 9pm slot they must be thankful they have 2 stable shows now. I didn't think Teenage Kicks would add viewers either-so that's good news and for Benidorm to remain fairly stable is more good news and usually shows on ITV1 drop about 1 million viewers for their 2nd episodes. Al Murray also ends respectably, should be enough to grant him a 3rd series. Next week's ratings tussle should be interesting, but why is HIGNFY back the week after, wouldn't it be better to get viewers into a routine instead of having a Dibley repeat? Also isn't 9:30pm a bit late for My Family-it will most probably beat Teenage Kicks in 2 weeks time, but not get the 7 million viewers it's used to-probably around 5 million. I don't see why the BBC don't use this kind of schedule: FRIDAY 9pm-HIGNFY 9:30pm-Love Soup SUNDAY 7pm-My Family With a schedule like that Doctor Who could move back to it's 7pm timeslot, My Family could pick up much stronger viewings with it's core family audience watching and BBC1 and ITV1 would have different comedies on at 9pm. |

If they made Waterloo Road an all year round weekly series they would have to rejig it as it is tied to the main school terms right now. But without focusing more on home life of staff and pupils there might be a big problem when the school is on holidays.
Hospitals and police stations do not have weeks off. Schools do. Not insurmountable but it would require changes to the currently successful format that shows 10 episodes in the main Autumn term (Sep to Dec) and 10 in the main Winter term (Jan to Mar). |

I think that Waterloo Road is one of the best programmes on TV at the moment, but I feel making it go all year round would ruin the quality, and many of the current cast would not stay on. I think the 20 episode run at the moment is just right.

I agree, and I like the break over Christmas because it keeps the show fresh. 20 1-hour episodes in succession is alot to take even for die-hard fans.

i don't understand this glee at ITV1 doing badly? Surely it's best for the viewer that both channels have well performing programmes? or this is some sort of warped fanboy stuff that people on this board seem to revel in. |

I'm suprised that Channel 4 haven't stuck Desperate Housewives on at 9pm/Fridays. Ugly Betty performed well in the same slot and DH does 2.5 million or so on Wednesdays at 10pm. It would at least provide some stability.

So, they got Desperate Housewives/Lost, Ugly Betty/Brothers and Sisters then Dirty Sexy Money/Reaper. They could only get Pushing Daisies or Gossip Girl if they paid over and above the ABC Studios deal, as both these shows are made by Warner Bros. This deal has now ended by mutual agreement. ABC Studios didn't expect huge success from Desperate Housewives and Lost, so they think they could have charged Channel 4 a lot more both for those shows and for the ones after. Channel 4 dont want to be committed to buying 2 new US series every single year. |

I really think the Friday night battle of the comedies we have coming is a mistake. My Family can get 7 million, Benidorm 6 million and Have I Got News For You 5 million with Teenage Kicks around 4 million - so why are BBC ONE/ITV1 scheduling against each other and reducing the comedy audience? Why is there some kind of unwritten rule that comedy can only be shown on Fridays. My Family is clearly going to be knocked by being up against Benidorm. If it was me, I would put Doctor Who back in the 7.00pm timeslot with My Family running straight after it, thus building a family audience that the BBC does very well with. Have I Got News For You would probably have to stay on a Friday night at 9.30pm or so I guess, but they could always wait until Love Soup had finished and put it on a Saturday night. I swear the schedulers are wrong so often and dent the potential audiences programmes could get in the right slot.

So DW got 8.4M despite its earlier starting time.
How does this compare to earlier years? |
