Actually Amazing Race isn't that expensive by all accounts, its a show that really does lend itself to recouping costs as the exposure for travel firms, airlines, attractions is such that alot of it can be done for pretty much nothing. It might be a little harder for the UK as you cant be as obvious with your product placement but with the rules relaxing next year you have to think it would be the ideal time to bring a Uk Version of The Amazing Race to the air.
Anyway the issue with The Amazing Race isnt the cost but the planning and organisation. Since season 1 the worlds got alot more scared and suspicious and security has heightened. It makes a season of the show very hard to put together with all the different countries and hence the different visas, travel arrangements both internally and exteranally , tasks ect ect that have to be arranged. Its one of the reasons that only a single season was Scheduled this season in the states

I'd like The Amazing Race, but knowing ITV they would screw it up. Might be good for BBC1 in The Apprentice's slot.”
ITV totally screwed it up in both seasons. The first by simply over exposing it. Whats fun about Survivor US is it cuts out all the crap about every day life on the island, its about the challenges, surviving and the plotting not about an hour of them mainly sitting around chatting, it basically became Big Brother on a beach.
The second season they screwed it up by allowing the viewers to have a say in who wins. The audience sees pretty much everything and it becomes a popularity contest rather than who played the smartest and most devious game as it does when its just tribal council deciding.
I also think though the UK's population doesnt help on these shows. Even with things like the editing being done in a more enetertainment driven way in the US rather than a sociological way in the UK our versions of shows like survivor and big brother are less 'exciting' because the uk contestants are less driven to win, they are more likly to be all about the experience where in the US they see it as a game and a game they will do anything to win.
Now this is where Amazing race could be a real success, it forces you into competition mode and doesnt let you spend most of the day just getting to know the other contestants. You are busy racing and everyone is your competitor that could knock you out
