Friday 19th April Overnights
BBC1
19.00- The One Show: 4.3m (23.3%)
20.00- EastEnders: 8.6m (41%)
21.00- Have I Got News For You: 5.9m (27%)
21.30- My Family: 5.8m (26%)
22.00- BBC Ten O’clock News: 4.9m (25.9%)
22.35- Friday Night With Jonathan Ross: 3.8m (27.2%)

ITV1
19.00- Emmerdale: 7.0m (36.5%)
19.30- Coronation Street: 9.5m (46%)
20.30- Coronation Street: 8.9m (38.2%)
21.00- Benidorm: 5.6m (25%)
21.30- Teenage Kicks: 2.5m (11.2%)
22.00- Lethal Weapon: 1.8m (10.3%)
Teenage Kicks was doing reasonably well but the competition from My Family killed it last night, down almost 1 million viewers.

I've yet to watch much of it, but caught the first 5/10 minutes of the first episode and thought it had some potential as a concept, being ruined by some foolish ideas. Most obviously, the canned laughter. It had some funny lines, but the OTT laughter at the not so funny lines leaves the viewer cold, feeling as though they are missing something (when in fact, it's just not that funny). Also, Laura Aikman is a pretty girl, but if she keeps waving her arms around like she did in the first 5 minutes, they will fly off her soon.

But even with 2.5m, it's doing better than MW/EB against stiff competition. It could still be in with a shot at a second series, I think.

ITV and BBC1 seem to be particuarly competitive this year and it doesn't help anyone, least of all the viewer. Holby Blue vs The Bill? Friday night 9pm comedies against each other? Trial and Retribution vs Ashes to Ashes?

^ When HolbyBlue aired last year, it still didn't do particularly well ratings-wise. I don't think it would've done better even if it hadn't been scheduled against The Bill.

My Family's OK. I like it, it can be very dry, but it's nice on a Friday night. I think parents relate with Ben and Susan. It's definitely a comedy to watch with the family, hence its ratings.

With Teenage Kicks doing so badly, I'd be tempted to do this:-

7:00pm Emmerdale
8:00pm Tonight
8:30pm Teenage Kicks
9:00pm Benidorm
9:30pm Coronation Street
10:00pm Headcases
10:30pm The Best of Happy Hour

That schedule wouldn't do too badly, it would allow Teenage Kicks to find some feet, it's not too bad. And Headcases can be broadcast twice a week.

I don't think Corrie can go at 9.30pm.

It might be an idea to switch Benidorm and Teenage Kicks though, allowing the later the Corrie lead-in but also a slightly different sort of competition from HIGNFY. Benidorm could potentially beat My Family in the ratings and would still do well, I think.

As it happens, I dont think there are any great benefits from switching the schedule and I expect them to leave it as it is. If Teenage Kicks can hold out for 2.5m, it might get lucky and have another series (unless ITV are offered a comedy which they have alot of confidence in to fill the slot).

The Top 20 programmes for each of the 3 main channels in Ireland in case anybody is interested. UK soaps do pretty well. Coronation Street getting 540,000 adult viewers on TV3 for example. The TVR represents the % of the total potential TV audience watching the show, which in Ireland would be about 3.4m total potential viewers if everybody in the country was watching tv.

Please tell me 'bainisteoir' isn't the Irish for 'banister', as that would be a REALLY dull reality show.

Thanks for the figs, GeorgeS; lots of familiar shows in the list, though I'm slightly perplexed why the Irish would want to watch bleak English soaps.

EastEnders had a higher percentage than the second Corrie did, but fewer viewers. Still 41% is very good for the soap. One good thing is that the comedies on BBC ONE and ITV1 seem to have revitalised Friday nights in terms of ratings, with over 10 million people watching either Have I Got News For You or Benidorm at 9.00pm. Both My Family and Benidorm are both doing well, although My Family is about 1 million viewers down on last year.

It is Irish for manager. AFAIK they have celebs managing Gaelic Football teams. I havent seen it myself. Its been a while since I've seen any RTE programmes. RTE reality programmes are done on a budget of about 100k an hour and it shows.

I've noticed that NCIS is a sleeper hit for Five as it regularly get 2m+ viewers on Fridays beating both Channel 4 and BBC Two. I'm surprised that they haven't getting the exclusive rights yet.

WOW at Britain's Got Talent! I think it's the most watched audition episode of any reality show ever! Also most watched show this week (beating the soaps). And All Star Mr & Mrs was only 0.2m off Doctor Who! Doctor Who dropped quite a bit. Pushing Daisies did as expected.

I'm sure ITV will be happy with 4.7m for Pushing Daisies.

It had lower ratings than that last series when it was on earlier....so I don't think it's anything to worry about.

In fact, having checked, three episodes last year had final BARB ratings lower than this....and I'd expect the final BARB ratings for this weeks to be at least 7.5 million.

WOW at BGT I'm gobsmacked It seems strange that everything else decreased, but BGT and Mr & Mrs increased. M&M and BGT seem to work very well together. Also if BGT is managing 10.3 for it's 2nd audition show, imagine where it could be in 5 weeks time-and it seems whatever it's against on BBC1 it will trounce-lottery, IDA and if Pushing Daisies can reduce Casualty to 6m, I would guess BGT would push Casualty down to sub 5m. Also it looks like it will beating the soaps on a regular basis which is great in itself! ITV have well and truly found themselves a major hit there!

Also it seems there's 2 different audiences for IDA and M&M, both getting higher figures than their previous competition last week.

Some Series Averages so Far

I'd Do Anything - 5.93 (26.3%) Highest Rated Episode: 6.8 (30.3%)
Britain's Got Talent - 9.55 (40.2%) Highest Rated Episode: 10.3 (43.3%)
Doctor Who - 7.80 (36.5%) Highest Rated Episode: 8.4 (39.4%)
The Apprentice - 6.64 (27.4%) Highest Rated Episode: 7.0 (30.0%)
Benidorm - 5.95 (25.8%) Highest Rated Episode: 6.5 (28.0%)
My Family - 5.85 (25.6%) Highest Rated Episode: 5.8 (26.0%)
Teenage Kicks - 3.33 (15.1%) Highest Rated Episode: 3.8 (18.2%)
Pushing Daisies - 5.20 (22.9%) Highest Rated Episode: 5.7 (24.7%)

Interesting to see Benidorm above IDA and My Family. Also The Apprentice last year was averaging 5.03 (21.6%) after four weeks.

Absolutely fantastic night for ITV and it think its great to see them making an effort on Saturday and coming off so well.

Britain's Got Talent is a fantastic and real family entertainment programme and if it can achieve well over 10 million on its 2nd show it really will be interesting to see what the final will bring in. Look out BBC - looks like there Saturday night primetime stronghold has well and truly fallen.

I'm thinking with these ratings BGT could achieve astronomical ratings for its finale. 15/16 million?

Doctor Who's ratings should teach those pesky schedulers a lesson for putting it on at 6.20pm.

ITV are past masters at producing lowest common denominator TV and BGT is no exception - at least it keeps chavs off the street for an hour. BBC1 needs to ditch Andrew Lloyd Webber rubbish as well as Graeme Norton (just not right for Saturday night) and concentrate on new entertainment with professional artists and comics. Also stop mucking about with the schedule for Dr Who - it peaked at 7.5m the time it started last week! And lastly shove Casualty into the 8pm slot of Sunday and give us some new drama on Saturday. Over to you Jay Hunt.
