I cant say I have seen too many 5 minute breakdowns(and there may be technicalities I am not aware of) but it does seem that Coronation Streets overunning and presumably early starting(or at least putting doubt in viewers minds) has quite an impact on the overall average-losing over two million in the first and last 5 minutes.

Precisely, and with the U-turn by the MoD, it looks like our thoughts are now shared by those in authority.

You cant really blame ITV for going after a scoop though (not that you are). I didnt see it so cant comment on the content. I think the MOD may just be embarassed that their stories werent as good PR as they might have hoped for.

I dont think the money would be enough to encourage others to be captured by the Iranians

The figure for 8.25 is the average from 8.25-8.30. I don't know the exact time EE finished, but i'm sure it was a few minutes before 8.30, hence the lower figure for those 5 minutes than for the rest.

Interesting 5 minute breakdown for the starts of Diamond Geezer on ITV1 and New Tricks on BBC1:

----------ITV1---BBC1
21:00...6.5m...6.6m
21:05...6.2m...6.7m
21:10...5.9m...6.9m
21:15...5.8m...6.9m
21:20...5.6m...7.0m

By the end of Diamond Geezer it was down to 5.3m. The pilot of DG had close to 10m, so really it was a bit dumb putting it against the ratings powerhouse of New Tricks (last year it averaged 8m), as i'd imagine they'd attract the same sort of people.

I caught some of Diamond Geezer last night. What a pile of poo it was too - typical dull and tired ITV1 drama.

Why can't ITV (or the BBC) give our greatest and best-loved comedy performer a decent comedy role for once - Del-Boy, Granville and Blanco are what David Jason will be remembered for, whilst Pop Larkin, Jack Frost and all the other unmemorable stuff he's done I suspect will not be. Surely he's got one more decent comedy role left in him?

I'm surprised New Tricks did so well though against David Jason - at least BBC1 has something worth watching on Monday nights now for once...

As for tonight, whilst I'd love Life on Mars to get the 7m+ audience it richly deserves, the reality is that two competing football matches and a lot of people being on holiday mean it may finish with a disappointing sub-6m audience.

LoM 5.8m
Man U (ITV1) 5.8m average; 7.45-9.45 match rating 6.3m
Chelsea (ITV4) 850,000?

EastEnders 7.2m
Holby City 6.1m

I hope I'm wrong for once...

Great to see Man U winning 3-0, for the obvious reasons of course, but also because the tie is now virtually all over and everyone can turn over to Life on Mars .

Another interesting rating - last Thursday BBC3 got 935,000 for My Big Breasts and I, very big for a digital channel, but BBC3 seems to be getting some big rating these days, 1m for the Doctor Who repeat on Easter Day as well.

Well since the score is Man Utd 3-0 Roma, I think the 2nd half may not get as big an audience now, unless Roma get a few goals quick.

Stick breasts in the title and you automatically get a big figure.

If this was Spain ITV would switch matches at half time & show Chelsea on ITV1 and Utd on ITV4

I think Life on Mars will do well - 6m last week against the footie, and i've heard a lot of people talking about this episode, on the radio lots, and on the local news tonight. Given that the Man U tie is pretty much all over i think it'll get somewhere between 6.5m and 7m.

Some interesting AI's:
The top AI last week was for Life on Mars (88), followed by Saturday's Doctor Who (87). On Saturday Any Dream Will Do beat Grease is the Word (74 to 69). Harry Hill's TV Burp did very well (81) while The National Lottery People's Quiz did pretty poorly (63 and 62).

For those who don't know:
The Appreciation Index, or AI, is a measure of how much the audience liked the programme. It is a score out of 100, based on responses from a carefully selected panel. The average score for drama on BBC1 and ITV1 is 77. A score in excess of 85 is regarded as excellent while a score below 60 is poor.

Programmes with smaller audiences often do better, as these programmes often have very loyal fans while programmes on BBC1/ITV1 tend to fair less well as they pick up more casual viewers with less interest in what they're watching.

And couple it with the term "Big" and the figure is even larger (sorry about continuing the pun )

"The finale of BBC1's drama series Life on Mars ended on a strong note with an audience of 7 million (28.1%) at 9pm, the highest of the current series. More follows."

Great ratings for Life on Mars, but it looks like more people watched the Champions League match when both shows were head to head (9:00-9:45)
