ITV1's new business-reality show Tycoon fell flat on its face last night with only 2m viewers, a share of 9%, as the commercial network had a disastrous peaktime performance.
The 60-minute show, featuring businessman Peter Jones as he tries to help hopeful entrepreneurs establish their own business ventures, saw its audience start off with 2.3m (10.8%) but this dropped to 1.8m (9.1%) at 9.15pm, it held steady at 1.8m for half an hour and ended on 1.9m (8.7%) for the final 15 minutes.
The first in a six-part run was significantly down on the channel's slot average for the year so far of 4.6m (19.8%). The Peter Jones TV-produced show found itself in the troubling situation of trailing all the other terrestrial broadcasters by some margin.
The show though did prove to be a popular amongst the upmarket ABC1s, much needed by ITV1. Almost 44% of the show's audience came from this demographic. However only 9.2% of all ABC1s, who were watching TV at the time, were tuned to ITV1.
In the same slot last Tuesday (12 June) ITV1 secured an audience of 6.8m (29.3%) for Britain's Got Talent.
The final part of BBC2's History of Modern Britain in the same slot had 2.8m (12.7%) while just creeping ahead was Five's CSI: Crime Scene Investigation on 2.9m (13.4%).
With ITV1 struggling at the time BBC1's Lenny's Britain had a boost in its fortunes. Last night's (19 June) edition took 3.2m (14.5%) over an hour, a rise of 800,000 viewers on the previous week.
Claiming the spoils at 9pm was Channel 4's The F Word with a sizeable 4.2m (19.3%), the highest audience of its current run. The show's audience was up by 1.3m compared to last week.
Tough gig for Dara
ITV1 remained at the bottom of the terrestrial pile at 10pm as Dara O'Briain's Tough Gig didn't even reach the 1m mark with just 902,000 (4.4%) for 30-minutes. The first edition of the show last week, which featured Frank Skinner, had 2.9m (13.5%).
The commercial network's slot average so far this year is 3.1m (15%).
BBC2's repeat of game show QI beat ITV1 by some margin with a healthy 2.4m (12%) while also gaining a sizeable advantage over ITV1 was Five's CSI: Miami with 1.7m (9.7%).
C4's reality show Big Brother began to regain some of the ground lost to Britain's Got Talent last week with the 65-minute show drawing 3.7m (21.4%) and peaking with 4m (24.2%) in the final 15-minutes. Last night's show was up by 400,000 viewers compared to Monday's (18 June) update.
BBC1 had little trouble claming the ratings spoils at 10pm with its news update taking 4.7m (24%) for 35-minutes.
Between 9pm and 10.30pm ITV1 could only manage to attract an audience of 1.6m, just 7.7%. Five took 2.6m (12.2%) while BBC2 was just ahead of Five on 2.7m (12.7%).
BBC1 secured an audience of 3.7m (17.6%) while C4 found itself top of the heap on 4m (19.1%).
Naked ambition
The commercial network also found itself in trouble earlier in peaktime as the final part of Trinny and Susannah Undressed could only gain 2.8m (13.9%), a drop of 300,000 viewers compared to the previous week.
Just managing to push ITV1 into third place at the time was the final part of C4's How to Look Good Naked. The hour-long show grabbed 2.9m (14.3%), an increase of 400,000 on its previous outing.
BBC1 once again claimed the spoils with the penultimate outing of Holby Blue on 4.4m (21.8%).
Five's MacIntyre: Edge of Existence had 1.2m (6.1%) while BBC2's Natural World managed 1.6m (8.2%).
Soap suds
An hour-long edition of Emmerdale managed to gain ITV1 some dignity at 7pm with 6.4m (34%). It was level-pegging with BBC1's EastEnders at 7.30pm on 6.4m (31.9%). The second instalment of BBC1's Trawlermen at 7pm had 4.1m (22.7%).
Between 6pm and 10.30pm ITV1 managed a share of just 17%, its second worst of the year so far, just ahead of its share of 16.3% which it got on 16 January. Over ITV1's own definition of peaktime (7pm to 10.30pm) it managed a share of 16.4% its worst since 16 January when over this time period it got just 14.8%.
