Recycling VHS tapes
oi_cheeky!
04-01-2007
My beloved S deck video recorder finally paked up and I've made a decision not to replace it with another video.

However, I'm left with a load of videos I need to dispose of. Pre-recorded is fine. I can give these to charity or sell them on ebay but cassettes that I used to tapw films and TV programmes is more difficult.

How can I recycle them? My Council (Cardiff) don't recycle them.

Any thoughts?

I've got about 100 to dispose of as well. Anyone want them free? They've all got at least one movie on each of them.

I've had around 100 to get rid of too, but I advertised them in work on the intranet notice board (I work at a University) and managed to give away of around 30 that way. I've also given 10 to my Mum. Just ask around for starters, see if anyone would be glad of them.

good idea, but I've found that no-one in work actually wants them. a lot of us have already moved over to PVR & DVD+rw. I very much suspect that the charity shops are going to stop accepting old pre-recorded movies too, 'cos they take up sooo much shelfspace.

I'll try Leo Hickman in the Guardian...

This is a subject I've had on my mind for ages also as I have stacks of VHS tapes that I no longer use. I've searched on Google for places that would maybe recycle or dispose of them in an eco-friendly way but can't find anyone. I'd have thought in this 'green' concious society that someone would have found a way of dealing with this problem.

I remember in the early-1990s that you could buy recycled video tape (it may have been Scotch brand but can't remember). I even remember the packaging saying it was ideal for satellite recordings which left me with the myth back then that (analogue) satellite reception was rather ropey. I always wondered what the tape was made from though - recycyled plastic of some sort?

Offer them on your local Freecycle group.

Not EVERYTHING can be recycled. I suppose you could take the tape out of the cassette and just recycle the cassette.

Glen.

EDIT: see!
