Scart feedback?
Schoolboy

Hi,

I have a DVD player which sends out a ghost audio signal in one speaker channel of whatever TV channel the TV was tuned to at the time. It's not loud but you can hear a distinct whisper of the TV audio at all times. This isn't just scart audio (DVD > TV)through the TV but also the stereo phono feeds coming from the player too. I have switched scarts, TVs etc but it hasn't changed.

Is there some specific pin in the Scart lead that is responsible and can be clipped off to stop this? I know only a select few pins are actually *needed* for RGB stereo watching of a DVD.

Thanks for your advice.

Just to clarify things - do you have your DVD and TV connected by a SCART lead and phono leads?

If so, that could be the ghost...

The SCART carries stereo sound as well as the pictures.

If that's not what you meant, then the TV AV set up may need fixed.

No, the phono outs go to a hi-fi while the scart is sent RGB to the TV (I mute the TV). However through both the phono audio feed and through the scart feed (when heard through the TV) the ghosting is there. without the phonos connected at all you still hear it through the TV.

This is why my conclusion was that it must be to do with using a fully wired scart allowing some leakage of TV audio back to the player which is in turn sent from the DVD audio outs as ghosting because different scarts and different TVs (even mono ones) yield the same ghosting.

Has this made it clearer?

Its not a 20" Mono Thompson TV by any chance is it? Mine does a similar thing. When on the AV input, you can hear the last tuned RF channel in the background, and it can be pretty loud.

I've fixed this problem by routing all sound out from input devices (video, Sky box and DVD) into the stereo - which is pro-logic - and plugging a pair of crapped out in-ear headphones into the headphone socket on the front. This has the effect of muting the speakers on the TV, and shutting it up.

Bit of a kludge, but hey, it works

Hi,

No it's not. I have a stereo LG TV and a 10 year old Philips mono.

Thing is, it wouldn't just be RF channels. If I last had Sky on, for instance, (always via scart input not RF) and left the box on when playing DVDs I'd still hear the ghosting.

Plus the sound comes from every audio output of the DVD, not just the scart feed and TV speakers.

I'm 90% sure it's a problem with an unecessary scart pin but I need to know which one(s) I can snip off which will most likely stop this.

Are you using the 'out of the box' scart leads?

If so ditch 'em and get some high quality, individually screened scart lead like those made by IXOS or QED. You may even see a difference in pic quality.

The DVD player didn't come with a scart so I used a £20 one, then the scart that came with the Sky Box then one that came with a VCR and all of them had exactly the same problem. This doesn't happen with another DVD player using an out of the box scart.

Is it possibly the DVD player at fault somehow?

Well if you really want to start snipping here goes!

The audio out pins are 1 and 3 (right and left respectively) and the audio in are 2 and 6 (right and left again) with 4 as an earth pin.

I would use a cheap scart lead to snip just in case the fault is inside the DVD player.

If your TV is usually muted, cut the output ones first and see what happens - good luck!

...and have a look at "www.hippy.freeserve.co.uk/scart.htm" to see which one is which...

Cheers,

I'll give it a whirl.
