Usually they just want the box back before they will close your account, they usually allow you to move to a new ISP first though.
Try calling again, see if you get a different agent who knows what they're talking about. |

So if you're really unlucky you could be without adsl for a month. |

does anyone know if OFCOM's new MAC code rules that come into force this month would help him out?

HC don't use MACs at present but the removal of the marker should not be affected by possesion of the STB - if you complain to OFCOM directly they can request the marker to be removed for you, as this should be done within around x5 working days (contracts etc do not affect this as they can still charge you as per T&Cs regardless of whether you are using the service).

I think that starts from 14th Feb. I personally wouldn't even think about moving till the compulsory mac code thing is up and running.

Yeah
Also by mid-February, Ofcom will force providers to give customers a Migration Authorisation Code (MAC) for free, to help those transferring an existing broadband service. When passed to the new supplier, a MAC should allow broadband to be transferred with minimal interruption to service. But the drawback is that providing and accepting the codes is voluntary at present. http://technology.guardian.co.uk/wee...rc=rss&feed=20 |
