CabbagesAhoy!
07-01-2007
Mr.Cabbages lovely 'Tom Tom' sat nav has died. Or gone in a coma........

It is fully charged but won't turn on. Anybody had any experience of this? Can you send them back? The Sat Nav is about 14 months old........

Nah - I've tried it too!

We press the power on and nothing happens.

It stops so many arguments I really need it to be better!!

have you tried the reset underneath, its a tiny hole that needs a pin to do it

Have you tried it say over mains with the battery out?

You could also remove the memory cards and batteries/mains lead and hold in the power button for a bit.

Otherwise, post in the mobile devices bit rather than advice, someone might be able to suggest something else there.

You could try taking it back to where you got it from. Although it is 14 months old, and outside the 12 month warranty, the Sale of Goods Act says that goods must conform to contract for a "reasonable time" after purchase - whilst this is not defined, you have rights for up to six years depending on the purpose of the goods and their value. As a sat nav is quite expensive (I couldn't find one cheaper than mine at £130) you could say that 14 months was not a reasonable time, you do have to prove it is faulty though. Above all, they might have an idea how to sort it, and/or put you in touch with a repair centre if they won't do it themselves.

Press reset using a pin inderneath the cradle. (Bottom of unit). Give it a few secs then the familer TomTom drums will sound and the TomTom logo will show.

This is a common fault with TomToms - especially after you plug 'em in the PC for upgrades or to use the TomTom One software. I've had to "fix" 2 or 3 since Xmas for various mates.

If you get the chance, back up the little card to your PC as well. If that corrupts you can then restore the backup to either a new or slightly larger SD card. If you put the lot on a 2 GB SD card, you can fit more voices/maps etc on.

The reset trick is one that I have had to use, mainly when I have pulled the power lead out without shutting down the TomTom first.

Interesting to read about a bigger SD card. If you download the new maps from TomTom's website they are much cheaper than buying them on an SD card. So if I get a new 1GB card then download the map, is it a simple matter to put the map on the card?

Yup. For example, just copy the folder North_America_MAP to the root of the SD card and the Tom Tom sees it. First time you use it you will have to activate the map.

There are *ahem* other sources to get maps from that don't always require activation though. If you're only going to say Australia or a part of the USA once, it's not worth forking out the extra cash for the maps IMO.

Obviously if you make regular trips, then buy them officially, but the fact you have to lob out quite a large sum of money for them makes them too expensive. Perhaps a "Limited time activation" feature could be put in a new release of the software so people can buy the maps legally and only have them active for say 1 month when they need them.
