BT landline minimum term
That Bloke
07-01-2007
I'm moving into a new flat next week and will have to get a BT phone line. Having been on NTL for a while, I've been looking at the terms for this.

Since it's a new build, it looks like I'm going to have to pay £125 for the connection , but the thing I'm having trouble working out is the minimum term.

To me, it looks like the 12 month min only applies if you choose to pay by direct debit. Is this right? Since I will probably be moving out after 6 months, that would be a big bonus to me!

It looks like this could end up being the most expensive broadband in history anyway .

No, it's 12 months full stop.

However, there is a way to buy yourself out of the contract if you have to - it appears to be for a charge of £18 (click).

Thanks for the link, it was really helpful . I think I'll go with www.yourcalls.net as they seem to be cheaper for the install (£117.50), line rental (£9.99/month) and a 1 month rolling contract.

I only really want the line for broadband, but at least it'll be there in case of emergencies as well .

Beware.

Although they don't appear to be connected (pardon the pun) to Carphone Warehouse, the first link below might be a cautionary tale:

Similarly, although you won't be particularly worried about outgoing telephony, the second links might be another:

Having actually spoken to them it is a none starter anyway. I don't know whether it was just the guy I spoke to, but despite what was said on the MSE thread they don't do provisions.

Anyway, having spoken to BT it is going to be the end of Jan at the EARLIEST before I can even get the line in . That also means that I can't get Sky or anything else until it is sorted.

There is no way in the world that I would have even considered a new build if I'd realised what a hassle getting basic services put in.

I believe you can opt for an 'offline' Sky package which means its not connected to your telephone line, I don't know if it costs any more and additionally if you want box office movies and the like you need to telephone the broadcaster.

You say though in your post that you'll be moving out after 6 months, I think there is a 12 month contract period with Sky.

The Sky one I'm not too worried about because I can always take the subscription with me (or move it across to another family member or something) but cheers, I'll have a look into that one.

Actually, although it annoyed me at first, it will be nice being away from the interwebbernet for a while, and maybe it'll force me into going to the gym, like I keep promising myself I will.

TB - I've only just noticed this thread, but I've said elsewhere that BT have/are supplying info in their BTupdate booklet that comes with the bill, that from May 07 there's gonna be all sorts of 'you paying' in their contracts. I'm writing a letter now dumping my landline.
