Lets use Karen as an example before SCD when she was competing how would she earn money?

In Karen's case teaching and judging I would think - pretty much the same as Len....

The others do demo etc at private function and corporate dos - Anton & Erin and Ian & Camilla do dacing dinners and weekends....and someone on here had Matthew & Nicole do a demo at her birthday party....

Flavia and Vincente also do dancing weekends. A friend of mine went to one just last weekend, and he says it was the best weekend of his life.

I wonder how much they are charging for this kind of dancing dinner.

My parents are going to a dinner dance with Anton and Erin at a hotel in Tetbury. The dinner dance costs about £100 (per couple) and the hotel another £100 - I'm not sure of the exact prices. During the day, A&E run a workshop, my parents aren't attending that, but I think that's another £100. The workshop is sold out for all their dates there in 2007.

Top dancers in general get money through teaching, lecturing, shows and demonstrations and also sponsorship. There is a lot of money to be made in Asia where dancing is massive and lots of them are treated like royalty! Many spend a lot of time over there teaching and doing shows.

And the reason that these pro's applied to be on SCD is clear - it has enhanced their reputations and increased their potential earning power.

It's one thing getting to the top of the dancing tree and earning on reputation (and titles) alone, but quite another when your face and your dancing ability has been beamed into so many peoples living rooms for the run of the series

Yes it definitely has raised their earning potential and that probably is a large factor in the dancers choosing to do the show, but I don't think money is the main motivation for a lot of them. I think many of the dancers are involved because they genuinely want to help the reputation of dancing (which I think is a great thing) and also because it is just a great experience.

It's great to see dancers on TV getting recognition for how much hard work and skill is involved. I still think that they should be paid just as much as the celebs though, there would be no show without the dancers.

The arguments here were exactly those I expressed on another thread (although the OP couldn't understand the logic behind taking a small 3 month fee to increase their 9 month earning potential.)

I am sure all would have been able to secure work with or without SCD within the trade - so to speak . Miss and Master Future World Champions looking for a dance teacher, for example. However, I dare say in a small market one cannot live on that alone, and so the national coverage enables them to make big hourly bucks from weekend and party demos/training. Get 100 people in the room and your hourly rate will rise......

I aslo agree that money is not the motivating factor. In dance I would think their ability to express their art nationally and to compete in a different scenario would be the major motivational factor. I expect they also enjy meeting celebrity, as we all do. What an experience KH has had, for example

I remember Lilia saying during SCD " they had to think very carefully about doing it , in terms of how would they be viewed and what sort of celebriuty would they get . Would it enhance their reputation or otherwise .
I understood they were invited to participate though.

They do get invited to do it, but also get paid. £23k the series, doens't matter when they are knocked out.

That Vincent and Flavia weekend is my idea of heaven! Ballroom and latin with Argie Tango thrown into the mix! Shame it was at a tricky time of year for me, I would have been there. Hope they have another one planned.

The last info I saw the celebs got £25,000 and the dancers
£15,000 which I thought was awful,they should get the same .
I also assumed there is a sliding scale for the celebs , leave early get less , only fair .

They all spent soooo much getting to the top of the dancing world, it's only fair they earn it back!

Can I just ask why all the pros teach in London, or Surrey? It's highly frustrating!!!

Because Surrey has Semley Ballroom where all pros train.

Another source of income is the teaching videos that most of the world's highest ranked professionals make.

They must earn a fair bit from them.

Undoubtedly. All pro dancers understand and accept that they are ambassadors for the world of dance and to successfully rasie the profile of Ballroom and LAtin dancing tothe point where it is prime time Saturday night viewing, is a great achievement.

John Byrnes said right from the outset, that he had his concerns whether this was the right thing to get involved in. This is serious business and the success or failure of SCD would have an impact on how dancers and the dancing world is viewed. If SCD was a bummer, then he would always be remembered as having brought dancing into disrepute. Thankfully he took the gamble and it paid off.

Mirko Saccani and Gaynor Fairweather got 8.1 million from a hong kong shipping heiress. Though had to pay back 4.2 million of it!
And as erinfan said, there is a lot of money to be made in asia for dancers to do lectures and demos.

Re-Gaynor and Mirko. Their client was the head of HSBC Asian Private Banking (in Hong Kong), who had paid them in advance for her classes.

She was offended at Mirko saying "move your arse" during an open practice session and sued for the return of 62 million HK dollars in advance fees (about 4.1 million UK pounds).

Mirko and Gaynor were counter claiming for 4 million HK dollars representing unpaid fees for classes already taken (about 265,000 UK pounds).

Does anyone know how this case panned out? Can't seem to find anything about how it ended (if indeed it has ...)?

The lady got some of her money back.
