That's a very good point. Development time of a phone from concept to production can be as little as 9 months, depending on complexity of course.
You also can't discount the loyalty of mobile phone customers. While many complain about Motorola's UI (and rightfully so in most cases) fact is if it was changed significantly, many users would
stop using the product. You can't teach an old dog, etc.
Apple don't have this customer loyalty for phones yet. Only I-Pods (and macs to a much smaller extent).
Apple have sold around 60million I-Pods. Motorola have sold about 55million Razrs. I wouldn't discount the mobile phone manufacturers quite yet
To the comment about adding 3G for Europe... I'll believe that when I see it to be honest. Adding 3G isn't a small matter of a slight change of SW and little chipsets. It will require a COMPLETE redesign of the PCB, mechanics, SW, antenna, power management, battery requirements, thermal requirements, repeat of all the validation tests, new suppliers for the supply chain to deal with, etc, etc.
It will require a new product. Just see the difference between a RAZR V3 and the 3G counterpart, RAZR V3
x. If they haven't already started making it, don't get your hopes up.
And yes, I'm a little biased... I worked at Nokia for 5 years and have been working at Motorola for almost a year now
