hi all.

just received my final bill from orange and i have a charge that states

Adjustments VAT applicable
MNP PAC (Debit) 17.87

so they have charged me £21 to port out my number?

i'm sure it doesnt say anything in the terms and conditions that they do this.
i know that by working for o2 it isnt something that o2 charge to do and i thought it was free for all networks.
would someone like to enlighten me on this matter please?

Call Orange and ask them, it should be free. Unless of course you requested an unlock code at the time for your phone or anything?

... or that you ported the number out earlier than the contract end date.

No mobile phone company will or indeed cannot charge you to port out.

Quick phone call will clear that up me thinks

"One Quick Call" will not clear it up - it will be a long and stressful call.

Orange charged me to Port my number 4 months ago - they never said they would charge when I asked for a PAC and it does not say they charge for PACs in the T&C so I rang up and complained.

They argued with me and refused to refund it til I told them I wanted the charge listed as a disputed item on my bill and that I would complain to Ofcom - then they suddenly said they would refund the charge as a "gesture of goodwill".

I think they are just trying it on to be honest, as most people would pay and not complain.

They have no right to charge you - call them, tell them you want the charge refunded as it is an error. Just hold your ground, and if they won't budge do what I did - ask for the charge to be listed as a disputed item and tell them you will complain to Ofcom. They will soon back down.

The money you have been charged is not a PAC fee. The charge is the balance of the required 30 day notification period. For example the earliest a number can port is seven days after a PAC is issued, this would leave 23 days of the required notice period to pay. Hope this clarifies the charge for you.

By getting a PAC and porting out within 7 days, you are effectvley getting out of your notice period early, so the PAC Debit charge takes it up to 30 days notice.

This is part of the T+C's (30 days notice required to pay to leave) so is all legal and above board.

That is NOT what happened in my case. It was a flat £10 fee, listed on the bill as a charge for the PAC.

I had given 30 days notice by recorded delivery letter as well as requesting a PAC.

They simply aren't allowed to do this.

I've been charged for this too - it's listed on my bill as 'MNP PAC (Debit)', for £9.36.

How are you supposed to use the PAC code without getting charged? If the code is only valid for 30 days, you've supposedly got to time it exactly right so you don't pay the remainder of the 30 notice period? Port out too early and you still get charged, too late and the PAC expires and you have to pay for another month of service?

I wasn't made aware of this when I requested the code by phone, or in the letter which contained it.

Just rung Orange - they didn't dispute the charge at all, apologised for it and agreed to send me a cheque for the amount.

Definitely must be trying it on?

Hi Pingu

Would love to know your mobile number so I can look at the history of the number and post an accurate response. If the number does not port on the 30th day then charges will be incurred....
