So, whats your oldest piece of gear you still use or own, maybe stored in a loft or somewhere?

Well for me its only a Philips midi hifi (with something called a "cassette" deck - remember those?) that is about 8 or 9 years old so I'm sure someone can beat that!

Just thought it might be a fun idea for a topic as older stuff interests me so looking forward to hearing what you got and any cool stories about it!

I bought my turntable - a Linn LP12 - in 1989 and still use it several times a week.

At the moment we're using a Sony 14" portable TV in the bedroom that was given to my wife in 1988. Even with Sky Digital it works fine. Looking forward to replacing it with a 32" LCD, though.

I have a very old Roberts radio in the bathroom that's at least 30 years old and which I use every single day.

In almost everyday use I have this set up

Thorens TD150MkII turntable c.1969
Celestion Ditton 44 Loudspeakers c.1978
Marantz CD-52 (mid 90's)
Audiolab 8000DAC (mid 90's)
Audiolab 8000A amplifier (early 90's).

I am also refurbishing a pair of QuadII valve amplifiers from the early 60's. Once finished these will be in everyday use with the 8000A relegated to pre-amp duties...

David.

Great! I'm only in my early twenties so have not had the time to build up a collection of gear that old. I somehow doubt that anything made this side of the mid 80's will stand the test of time with build quality being lower and standards changing evermore rapidly. Though we will see!

A friend of mine collects old 78s and still uses a windup gramaphone to play them much to our amusement.

My father-in-law has a stereogram circa early 70s he still uses which I refer to as the 'teak coffin on legs'. I think the reason it still works is that the man at the shop advised him that electrical equipment requires a rest after using for a while, so he always turns it off after one hour use and will not use it again the same day.

A late 60's B&O Beomaster FM/AM radio, 4 foot wide, 6 inch high, wooden cabinet.

One of the first transistor systems, still working perfectly

(From way before my time!)

Great hearing about all this old stuff that's older than me still in use!

I just had a memory that came back to me after reading all this... Back when I was a kid I remember seeing in a mate house an oldish telly but with a difference - It had a radio and either one or two audio cassette players built into it. The tape decks where on the left had side where you would often find the controls on a 1970's telly. Do any one you remember systems like these at all? I would love to find out more about them as it seemed like a odd thing to do, combine a hi-fi and telly in one. I'm guessing it was late 70's or early 80's as it silver and I think it may of been made by a from called Fidelity, though not sure. Would love to know more about this is anyone knows anything.

Oh and my grand mother still uses an old Phillips (IIRC) radiogram from 1930's / 1940's.

Fidelity were later taken over by Amstrad, I used to have a Fidelity colour portable, probably about the same era?.
