Hi all

I know nothing about this stuff so would like some advice.

This morning (when no computer was switched on) the phone rang, when I picked it up there was a sound like a fax noise on the other end. I hung up and then dialled 1471 to find out the number that called me, and strangely enough it was my own number, but with 00 added on the front of it.

I phoned BT and they said they have no idea what it could have been, as they have never heard of that before. They said they would do a line check and phone me back (they didn’t phone me back)

Any ideas?

I know that if you have one of the voice mail services like 1571 it can leave your own number on your 1471 when it calls to tell you messages have been left. Maybe you had a message on 1571 but the call back to tell you failed with a modem type noise for some reason.

Otherwise I guess someone could be spoofing your number to fool or play a trick etc.

Other than that I guess there are many other reasons...

We don’t have an answer machine service on our line.

If you pick up the phone and tap the hangup button very quickly then put the handset down it will ring you, but I don't think that logs it on 1471 it's meant to do it for some reason...

Its a ghost trying to ring you from the other side. It a message it was trying to leave but you put the phone down on it

you can test your line by keying a four digit number (1751) I think.

If it's a BT line, I think you mean 17070.

I've had a similar problem on my mobile. Like you the number started 00
I think it can be done with VOIP services where you can enter your own CLI
for example

last night our phone rang, they rang off before we could answer it, but the caller display had our number on but with an extra 0, I was wondering if it had anything to do with AOL since we got an email on monday saying they would be upgrading our phone line within the next few days.

I had the same thing evenually found it was a text going to my landline, which does not accept texts, found the source from bt was a tmobile service facility that originated the call, hope this makes sense!!
