O2 Pay-As-You-Go Unlocking Question

Hi,

I've just bought a new Nokia 6230i locked to O2 Pay-As-You-Go.

Does anyone know how much you have to top-up by with O2 before they will unlock the phone for free, or the fee they charge if you haven't bought enough top-ups ?

I know I could just pay about £5 for the unlocking code online but as it's a new phone I would sooner get it done via O2 as they might need to recover their subsidy and wouldn't want them to blacklist the handset or something.

Many thanks,

Steve.

O2 will only issue the code after 12 months and even then the charge is £15.00.

The 6230i can be unlocked for free using a code. See the unlocking thread at the top of this forum for details. It's perfectly legal and your phone will not be blacklisted.

where did you buy it from? I bought the very same phone from CPW and mine was network unlocked straight out of the box!!! seemingly, they sell some contract handsets as PAYG and just throw a PAYG sim in.

can i ask, have you tried the new network sim in the phone to see if it works?

Hi,

I bought the phone from Argos as it was the cheapest I could get the handset for and that was my main concern, rather than which network it was locked to. £79.99 Argos, £99.99 everywhere else, although effectively £89.99 in my local O2 shop as £10 credit was included. My main reason for choosing Argos, except for the price, was the cheaper insurance - £14.99 from Argos for 12 months compared to £24.99 direct from O2.

I've heard that some, but maybe not all, CPW phones are supplied unlocked but for me whether the phone was locked or unlocked wasn't really an issue, but I've since been able to unlock my phone using an unlocking code kindly provided by someone on this forum.

Regards,

Steve.
