Mobile phone shops asking for payment by credit/debit card only ?

Hi,

I've recently been looking at new pay-as-you-go phones and at least two retailers - Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4 U - said something about they would only accept payment for the handset by credit or debit card ?

I was able to buy a phone from Argos using cash no questions asked.

Just curious as to why they have bought in this restriction and how long they have been doing it for.

Thanks,

Steve.

I was told that it was so that any Pay & Go phone can be traced to the owner.

if there is a specail offer like a phone for 29.99 then you have to pay by card so that you are limited to only buying 2 in 1 name because it is logged because otherwise you could buy loads for 30 quid less and resale them. i had this about 2 years ago.

hope that helps

Yes, when there is an offer they will give a different price for cards and cash.
For example, where a phone is offered at say £80 + £10 top up. If you were to pay cash it would be something like £80 + £25 top up.
The crazy thing is that its possible to get pre-paid debit cards which you top up with cash. You can easily get several of these. So the phone shops gain nothing except alienating customers.
But then they've never been good at customer service.
