Max speed estimates
Just checked my max line estimates at Tiscali's site.
Main Tel. number is 4mb - currently 300Kb if the telly is on with HC. Second line is 5mb Do they let you have BB on a second line? Is it worth it? Is it easy to transfer? Ta |

worth removing the ring wire (look on google) - or examining your extension wiring. speed difference is more likely to be related to that than quality of line between you and the exchange.

Don't forget the distance of the line between you and the exchange.
I was one of the triallists for BT's Broadband when they first started out many moons ago. After the trial I had to have the equipment removed and wait 2 weeks to have it reinstalled as I chose an alternative ISP from the one I trialled with. When they came to re-install the BT engineer couldn't get it going for some reason and found over a mile of extra cable hooked up in the exchange! I think dialling 17070 from a BT line has an option somewhere for an eapprox line length. |

I'm pretty far from the exchange. The 17070 thing is apparently only available at some exchanges - not mine. BT realised that knowledge is power.
Well, perhaps I'll take a look at the ring wire thing and see if that makes a difference. So, you don't think that switching to the other line will make too much of a difference? |

It might make a difference, it might not. Point being if your "main" line has lots of extensions (and is the slower one) then it might be worth investigating:
a) ring wire b) extension wiring as both of these can act as an antenna causing interference, verus your second line which might just have one socket so not suffer from either of the above... |

Right, I have an ADSL v1.0 faceplate which has separate sockets for Phone and STB.
The STB connections have three wires - two blue/white either side of an orange/white. Am I supposed to remove the middle one, making sure I can connect it up again? Ta |

OK, cheers. I think the socket I have is fine. Removing the ring wire might squeeze a few more Kb out of it but no more apparently.
Oh well. |

I got just over one extra mbit when removing mine, so I wouldn't scoff at that...

Hm, not scoffing, just quoting from one of the links.
Did you have a faceplate with split phone/stb sockets like mine? If so which wire did you remove? I'd definitely love to get an extra Mb! |

no - in fact i've got an old style master socket so most of the urls above didn't help much (in terms of the colour of my wires being different to the ones shown/described). but what was consistent was that it was the wire in slot 3 that you had to remove - so presume it'd be the same for you. even if you stuff it up then you can go to maplin and buy a crimping tool for a couple of quid and reattach it really easily...
