Does anybody have any songs which are so powerful and beautiful that they have the ability to reduce them to tears?

With me it has to be either Motorcycle Emptiness by the Manics or the magnificent Atmosphere by Joy Division.

To be honest, nothing ever makes me cry but the songs that get me more than any others are

Love Will Tear Us -Joy Division
About A Girl - Nirvana

Until recently no song had ever made me cry but a rather large case of unrequited love has made me a bit emotional at times. I know Dosed by the Red Hot Chili Peppers has, as has Could Have Lied, also by the Chilis. Warning Sign by Coldplay probably has too

Fields of Gold - Eva Cassidy.

The River - Bruce Springsteen

Candle In The Wind (The Diana version) - Elton John.

That last one is a joke by the way.

'You'll never walk alone' as sung by an Anfield chock full of Liverpool supporters.

Landslide - Fleetwood Mac. If it's any defence, I only cry when I'm singing/playing it on guitar, it and relate the words to life.

I took my love, i took it down
climbed a mountain and I turned around
and I saw my reflection in the snow covered hills
'til the landslide brought it down

oh, mirror in the sky
-what is love?
-can the child within my heart rise above?
-can I sail thru the changin' ocean tides?
-can I handle the seasons of my life?
I don't know.....

well, I've been afraid of changin'
'cause i've built my life around you
but time makes you bolder
even children get older
and i'm getting older too

oh, take my love, take it down
climb a mountain and turn around
-and if you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
well the landslide will bring it down

-and if you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
well the landslide will bring it down
the landslide will bring it down

Eva Cassidy - Over The Rainbow

Didn't particularly like this song till I heard her sing it. Just shows what a great singer can do. And the words just seemed to fit what happened to her.

Also the introduction on Coldplay's The Scientist makes me stop and listen but doesn't quite qualify cos I didn't cry to it yet.

'Don't Give Up' - Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush. Ok when I'm just listening, but singing it makes me cry. And it's not just me - I've noticed that anyone listening to me singing it is also invariably reduced to tears.

Wasn't this originally done by Sting? And it's also featured in a Cancer research advert.

If it's the same one, it is a very beautiful song.

This song usually comes up in every one of these lists I've seen on the net. Covered by Tori Amos, Dixie Chicks (I think they're in the American charts with it right now) and The Smashing Pumpkins - it's a beautiful song.

Good band. Honest, and passionate pop music.

The Night i heard Caruso sing by Everything But The Girl, and Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley.

Both songs get me every time - just superb.

Im listening to this song right now.

And Still by Reba McEntire

You really have to listen to the song, the words on their own just dont seem right but here is how it goes:

Thousands of people live in this town
And I had to run into him
When I saw him there on that busy street
Those feelings came back again
There was nowhere to run, nowhere to hide
He walked up to me, looked in my eyes

And still
The world the stood still
I couldn't move
And all I could feel
Was this aching in my heart
Saying I loved him still

He said how've you been
It's great to see you again
You're really a sight for sore eyes
I said, I can't complain
I'm doing fine
We talked as the people rushed by
We laughed about old times and all we went through
That's when he hugged me and said I've missed you

And still
The world the stood still
I couldn't move
And all I could feel
Was this aching in my heart
Saying I loved him still

That's when she walked up to him
He said, this is my wife
I gave my best smile
But I was dying inside
He said we gotta go now
It's getting late
It was so good to see you
Then they walked away

And still
My world the stood still
I couldn't move
And all I could feel
Was this aching in my heart
Saying I loved him still

Its taken of the album read My Mind, which has a few other weepies *sniff*

well..bring a lump to my throat anyway.

Abba 'The winner takes it all'. If youve just been dumped and listen to this song you'll be sobbing ya guts out.

Bonnie Tyler 'Total eclipse of the heart'. Ditto

Malachi from FA singing 'Fields of gold'. The version he does on the FA album is so emotional.

Never made me cry, but along those lines:

Barenaked Ladies - Call and Answer

Barenaked Ladies - The Wrong Man Was Convicted

Toy Story 2 Soundtrack - When She Loved me

That last one is a really good song. The name of the woman who sings it escapes me right now, but I know she's Canadian.

That's Sarah McLachlan. Find somewhere that has the album "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy" - it's amazing!
