Do you mean the Microsoft Zune? I don't think they're available in the UK.

Even so, Microsoft seem to be using the zune as a kind of trial run for a proper launch later on. The Zen Vision W is a proper media player too whilst the Zune is an mp3 player that is compatible with videos and photos.
Like for like, the real alternative would be a Zen Vision M. |

Whats are your top 'wants' from the player?
If it's video: I don't think I'd even consider the Zune. It's native format support is poor, the software is glitchy by all accounts and the battery life is less than spectacular. The Vision:W is the clear winner here. Much nicer screen, much nicer software, many more formats handled. Or you could look at a couple of alternatives which are, arguably, better than both: The Cowon A2 plays more formats and has a better battery life than both. You can get the 30gb version for exactly £200 on ebay. Nearer £250 if you use an online store. Some of the new Archos players are pretty damn good too ... but you'll be lucker to get the higher spec models for less much less than £240 odd. Of the two you mentioned though, if I was buying one of them, I'd go for the Creative. |

Yup .... thats a good price and it is a good player.
There are a couple of things that put me off the Archos players though (and they still apply to the newer models which weren't around when I bought my A2): 1. The battery life (esp for video) is OK, but not great. Half what I get on the A2. 2. Archos support is pretty ropey. When I was looking, firmware updates were almost non-existant for them. Now, it seems they do release updates ... but you have to pay for them! (Read the Amazon reviews) 3. It's French ..... ever driven a Citroen? (semi joking)On the plus side for the 604, if you plan to use it record from an external source, they are apparently the player to go for. The 604 and the Vision:W are both very good players. It's a coin flip between the two in all honesty. For me, I'd still take my A2 ahead of both .... mainly due to the battery life cos I can't be ar$ed charging stuff up all the time ..... but thats just me. |

Is the A2 suitable to slide in your pocket?

Depends how big your pockets are.
![]() Not really though, it's bigger than the average MP3 player, but it's still quite compact for what it is. |

I carry mine to work every day.
In a jacket pocket, it's fine. It'll go in the back pocket of a pair of jeans .... although obviously you don't want to sit on it. It'll fit in a breast pocket of a shirt but it'd sag like crazy. Same for any player with a screen of that size though, including the Vision:W. Dunno about the dimensions of the Zune. If you want something with that sort of screen size, it's going to be bigger and heavier than an iPod. One thing I do like about the A2 is that the screen is encased so the LCD isn't directly exposed to it's pretty hard to damage. Thats not the case with the Archos. Dunno avout the Vision:W on that front. |

The Cowon is rather large and is a PMP rather than a music player with other bits attached, certainly not comparable to the Zune or the Ipod Video. It is much more like the other Archos devices and PMPs from other manufacturers.
If you are sure about getting a cowon A2 (I have seen one is real life and they are quite large) then I'm sure a google search plus looking at the usual suspects e.g. ebay will get you a decent price. |

If you want it for video, and you download off the internet, then it's a much better choice than the Zune .... without question. (Unless you don't mind converting everything first ... zzzzzzz) The Grundig looks like reasonable value for money but I can't say I know much about it. From what I can find online, the display is nowhere near the likes of the A2 or Vision:W (less colours, smaller, not widescreen) and the battery life is OK, but not up there with the A2. But, if you can get it for £100 odd, it looks like pretty good value. Sizewise, it's comaprible with the A2, Vision:W etc etc. I'm still not clear on what you want here. If you want a full-on PMP, that is *built* with playing video in mind, then the better ones are a bit bigger than the iPod etc. If you want an MP3 player with the intention of playing the odd video, but aren't that bothered, then look at the iPod, Zune, Vision:M (personally, I'd go for the Vision:M there .... of the smaller players it has the best video handling).
