Ipod shuffle not detected by Windows

Does anyone have any idea why my Ipod shuffle is not being detected by one of my Windows XP's PC's?

It's a freebie 512MB one I got last summer and which hasn't been used for a few months, so when I plugged it in my USB port and Windows didn't detect it I assumed the battery was flat, so left it in to charge.

Removing it an hitting play (with headphones in) shows the battery is charged - the rear light comes on in green when pressed (I assume that means it's fully charged, the instructions I got were in French and Dutch), but it doesn't appear in Winamp (where it used to) or as a USB Mass Storage device.

In my Laptop it appears as a USB mass storage device and the dopisp plugin shows it in Windows Media Player, and allows me to sync to it just fine, ditto in Winamp. When in my laptop the light is solid Orange, but in my PC it flashes green constantly. Is it time to replace it with a Zen Nano or can it be fixed? In the same socket on my PC (i've also tried a rear port and one on the USB-PCI card) my Zen Vision:M and Sony Ericsson K800i both are detected by Windows and Windows Media Player.

Itunes has not been installed on either machine, and it isn't going to be either.

iTunes install cd has the drivers for the iPod. Dont know if you can install them without iTunes though.

Hope this helps

“On a Windows PC, iPod shuffle will appear in My Computer as a "Removable Disk," however the iPod shuffle volume will not mount correctly. The unit is listed in Device Manager under "Disk Drives" as "Apple iPod USB Device."”

Sounds like your problem?

Nope, doesn't even show - when I plug it in one of two things happen

1. Bugger all
2. Green LED Flashes

If it was playing when I plugged it in then it stops playing then does one of 1 or 2.

I was able to upgrade the firmware on my laptop, but the desktop still can't see it. It's NOT listed in device manager.
