DMR-EX95VEBS message puzzle!

Suddenly, for no obvious reason I'm getting the message 'sleep'. What does this mean? I'm puzzled. It seems to be working ok. Usually, it showed the number of the channel I was watching. Suggestions would be appreciated.

The 'SLEEP' message means the hard drive has gone into stand by mode. It will also have HDD SLP on the display on the unit.

Thanks - I've also discovered that if you have a DVD disk in the drive you don't get this message.

I don't get it either, cos sometimes I get the sleep message and sometimes I don't. And no, its nothing to do with how long its been since I used it!

It only happens with the hdd because it spins down and stops, therefore taking a matter of seconds restarting instead of being instantly available, the dvd only spins when its playing or being read which is why the message is only for the hdd.

But I think the HDD only sleeps if the DVD tray is empty. I'm not sure why they do this.

Yup, dead right, the hdd doesn't go into hibernation if there is a disc in the drive.

Yes, I agree. I've paid more attention now you've mentioned it and that's the explanation, it only goes into sleep when no disk in drive. Why is that?

It is actually specified in the manual (page 25) that it will behave this way , although there is no obvious functional reason for it.

Perhaps the designers made the assumption that if the user has a disk in the machine , they are using it and may require fast access to the HDD.

It may be that the hard disk is there to act as an instant buffer in the event of a user pressing record - when recording to a DVD.
