MC Hammer
Kris Kross The Fat Boys 2Pac and Biggie (both underground at a depth of six feet) All are more 'underground' than some of your choices. Daz Dillinger? Erm...only part of the biggest-selling rap group of all time. DJ Quik? The original Compton G. Too $hort? Even my sister has his CDs and she likes Gareth Gates. The others are fair enough though

You have to remember that Dogg Food was released at the absolute height of DRR's powers - it went platinum within its first few days on sale. I'm not sure if the figures i've seen include Daz or Nate's successful solo work, but in any case they swept all before them.I meant DAZ as a solo artist he as now left death row and runs his own independent record label. DJ Quik & Too $hort never get any radio air play or there videos never been on MTV. I didn't know tha dogg pound were biggest-selling rap group of all time. Did they sell more then NWA, RUN DMC, Wu-Tang etc....... As for the others...yes of course they don't get any radio airplay or videos on MTV...but that doesn't make them underground. Major label support, chart success - both Quik and $hortie are big names in the world of hip-hop, so can hardly be underground. By your rationale 90% of the artists in the world are 'underground' simply because they don't get playlisted by pop radio!!! Besides, not that i listen to his show for his wack wigger shit, but Westwood has played both extensively over the years. |

Your definition: Anyone who isn't in the current breakthrough chart elite of hip-hop superstars (Eminem, Dre, Snoop, Xzibit, JD, Jay-Z, Master P, Nas, DMX, Busta, Puffy, Nelly , Wu Tang etc etc etc). My definition: Elite breakthrough crossover stars (as above) Well known genre artists (Quik, $hortie, Daz, Shade Sheist, Ren, ROC and their ilk) Underground artists (anyone pressing records out of their garage, anyone trying to sell their tapes out the boot of their car, anyone who has a cult following in a particular club or neighbourhood, signed artists who are yet to release their first major label album) Now let me be the first to state that I don't think i know ANY underground artists, other than the collectives that get their stuff out there on mp3.com. Underground hip-hop is the same as garage punk bands or unsigned pop acts - they are UNDISCOVERED...not even by the label A&Rs, much less by consumers like ourselves. |

I often think about Shade Sheist. What the hell happened to him, and why has he never broken through. He had that hit 'Where I Wanna Be', but it was on Daz's compilation album (why, it should have been on Sheist's own album, which SHOULD have been out when that single was out). If that had've happened, he would be a very well known rapper now, and that album would have impressive sales. So basically I think the reason Shade Sheist hasnt broken through, is record label mess-ups, shame.
Then to release Money Owners as the 1st single of Shade Sheists own album, yeah its good, but its pretty underground, doesnt exactly appeal to the masses. I'm not saying that he should sell out, just that the 1st single maybe should have been more radio friendly. |

Shade Sheist the next Warren g I don't think so. Warren G invented G-Funk in early 90's. Shade Sheist doesn't come close warren. Warren's new album The G Files: #213 coming out in May and the 213 reunion album before the end of the year hopefully they will be classics like regulate.dpg |

But give me one good reason why Shade couldn't be the next Warren G? He's got the production team, he's got the rhymes, he's got the flow and he's got the image. Add to that the backup from most of the DPG anyway and you have PURE G-Funk. It's not as if Warren was ever the most techinically proficient rapper in the world anyway - he's just got that laid back West Coast syncopation - which Shade has in spades. So, in conclusion: BREAK YO'SELF, FOOL! |

I know Warren isn't the most techinically proficient rapper in the world but he still has has a good layed back flow and produces all his own material. He didn't just live off Dre's and Snoop's success he got his own record deal with Def Jam. Warren doesn't need Nate to get a hot single like Shade does. Quote:

Yeh Paris is great, he is very upfront and frank with what he says, basically, he calls it like he sees it. I think if there is one rapper that the FBI and CIA have been keeping tabs on over the last 15 years or so then it would be Paris.
The other artists on my list have made some great singles and albums over the years, there are loads of other artists as well, but I don't really keep tabs with Hip-Hop no more. The older stuff is the best... 1988-2001.... As for Chino XL he is like the Rodney Dangerfield of Hip-Hop he has got a vicious tongue on him, he really does cut into everybody with his lyrics. Both his albums 'Here to Save You All' and 'I Told You So' have got their highlights. |

You're talking like 'Pac was some sort of uber-gangsta who just had no fear whatsoever. 'Pac wasn't any sort of gangsta...he was just a great method actor who assimilated anything he needed to 'become' whatever image he wanted to portray. He was a chameleon, whether it was as a poet, a political activist, a young black man of ambiguous sexuality, and of course a gangsta rapper. Problem was that 'Pac didn't know when to stop. If you look at Snoop, for example - intelligent, middle-class young black guy with a lot to say, but under no illusions that he was on some divine crusade. He just loved playing the role of Tha Doggfather, and did it brilliantly. He didn't shy away from the gangster life of a lot of the people who surrounded him at Death Row, but he was a rapper first and a gangster about 97th. Real G's who grew up in Compton or Red Hook or wherever, who were part of the life glamourised by gangsta rap, who actually knew what it was to be a killer, a pimp and a pusher...they didn't need to conform to an image, or prove themselves like 'Pac did. 'Hit 'Em Up' is still my favourite joint to come out of Death Row - just because it sums up the whole East Coast-West Coast thing, and puts the full-stop on the story. It's the most angry and intense flow anyone had ever put on wax, and it is still the song to play to epitomise gangsta rap. But 2Pac was nothing more than a very sensitive, talented guy who lacked an identity playing at being an OG. And that's why his fool ass got shot. |

I know tupac wasn't a real gangsta he just played the part of Tha Don and even said himself many times he wasn't a blood he just was around gang members everyday when he was on Death Row. He was real Thug who didn't fear being hurt or killed and he wasn't afraid to say what he felt about anyone or anything.
