On O2 online, you can have free calls or texts. The more you top-up the more you get. For example, I top up £30 a month and get 300 off peak minutes, a treat of 25 texts, 1megabyte of data and 10% of my top-ups back every 3 months. Plus i've still got the £30 to spend.
You can have texts instead of calls if you want, I would get 1000 any network texts.

The evening and weekend texts are to ANY network provided you have topped up your phone at least £10.

£10 top up or more gives you 3000 FREE evening and weekend texts to ANY UK Network
20% back every month on top ups of £20 or more.

They are currently giving away Pay as you go SIMS with free evening and weekend texts:

It's possible to check Vodafone 3G coverage at the following link. It'll give you an idea of what signal strength is like in the area you might want to use the phone before buying: http://online.vodafone.co.uk/dispatc...ageID=PPP_0026

Vodafone Live! is a free internet portal to browse (it can be used on both 3G and GPRS), you;ll be prompted with a '£' sign if you reach a section where you can make a subscription (e.g. Full On Football for Premiership goals etc).

With 3G services, such as Mobile TV, there's some more information over on the Vodafone website at: http://online.vodafone.co.uk/dispatc...pageID=IM_0001

Do T mobile top up cards run out? Interested in the free sim card offer for my mum to use with my old phone but hardly ever uses phone. She got dropped from service before because refused to pay to top up when still had lots of credit left but this was some time ago. I know that Orange & Virgin are expiry free.

I'm on t-mobile's everyone pay and go price plan 12p minute to any network any time of the day. 10p per text. dont text much though.

Brilliant if you just want to pay for what you use and not have the stress of using up laods of credit calling frined son other networks

Was perviously being ripped off with O2's 50p/min pay and go
And before that, i let orange rip me off with a similarly proced tarrif

i had a tmobile payg sim from about 2 - 2 1/2 years ago that i put back in my phone and it still worked, with the exception of it needing some credit (use it all before it stopped using it as i went onto contract) not sure whether this still applies , you could try calling t mobile customer services for an answer to that.

EDIT... Have just spoken with T Mobile - they said i was lucky re the above - was advised that for the line to stay active you will need to make a chargeable event once every 6 months. by chargeable, thye mean send a text, make a call - something that takes a little credit off the balence. If no chargeable events made in the 6 months, they will asume the phone is not being used and will place it into 'hibernation' and a text will be sent to the phone advising this. From there, the user will have 90 days to re active the number( not sure how, she didnt explain, but am assuming you make a call/send a text) otherwise the number will be recycled (taken off the sim)
