Read this story in the Dundee Courier, have to say though, the mother in the story has to take some responsibility too.

Her daugheter should be pay as u go.

Am not surprised by this, some staff will say anything to get a sale. I was told when I bought my phone I could downgrade my T mobile tarrif in six months from the start, it is actually nine. Wasn't impressed sales staff should never lie for a sale.

Never been happy with any phones 4 u.......I feel they're too pushy. Slight O/T but there you go. Why sell a mobile contract monthly to a 12 year old! Slightly insane.

You can downgrade your price plan after 6 months. Was this years ago? As far as Im aware there is no exception to this?

I have no sympathy for the mother.
If you read the story she admits she had to persuade the store manager to let her have the phone for her daughter, as at first they refused. And now it is the stores fault!
No wonder the daughter is turning out irresponsible with parents like that.
I used to work in retail (clothes) and you wouldn't believe the pressure people put on you to sell them something inappropiate. You know if you do it will come back to haunt you.

somebody actually spent time writing a news article like that

get her a cheap PAYGO phone and when she abuses the credit don't let her go out.

It's not rocket science is it!
