I currently have the following equipment:
Evesham V32EMRO-ZE3 LCD TV
Thomson DHD4000 PVR
Sony DAV-S400 DVD Player
Telewest cable box (absolute min package)

I've just bought a Bush DVR 3004 so that I can archive stuff off my Thomson DHD4000 & also record Sky 1 from my Telewest box.

Problem I seem to have is with setting up & hope someone can give advice.

Current set up is:

Telewest box TV out to Scart 2
RF input to Thomson > Thomson to TV RF
Thomson TV out to Scart 1
Sony to Video In (Red/White/Yellow)

My initial attempt was to:
RF from Thomson to Bush DVD recorder & then to TV
Telewest video scart out to Scart in on Bush
Bush Scart out to TV scart 1 (Just to see if works as I think I will need a scart switch)

Can watch a DVD from Bush doing this. However after running set-up on bush it says picked up 6 channels but TV screen is just green fuzzy lines on Scart 1

Also if switch on Telewest I can hear sound perfectly but same green fuzzy lines, although if switch to Scart 2 - No problems.

Tried again running RF direct to Bush first, Then Thomson & then TV but still no TV picture from Bush.

I believe that because I only have 2 Scarts on TV & want to input 3 & because only have 1 video scart in on Bush & want to input 2 sources - I will need 2 scart switches?

There are a variety of solutions, which don't require scart switching devices, but which one to go for rather depends upon what type of inputs the equipment has.

Your DHD4000 has two scarts and s-video/rca audio, the TV scart outputs RGB or CVBS and the VCR scart outputs CVBS and will loop through RGB.

Your TV accepts RGB/CVBS on scart 1, RGB/CVBS/S-video on scart 2, it also has a separate S-video/composite input, a component input and HDMI.

Does your Bush recorder record in RGB, S-video or CVBS via AV2? What does it output from AV1? Does it have any other connections?

Does your Telewest box output RGB, S-video or CVBS from its TV scart? What about from its VCR scart? Does it have any other connections?

Your Sony DVD player appears only to have RCA video & Audio output - shame - your Bush might even give a better picture!!! - please confirm.

tellyfiend - thanks for your comments but I'm dont know what either the recorder or telewest box output, nor where to find out!

The Bush does have the following connections:

Check your manuals! If they are not to hand we'd need to test them. I believe however your comments on the Bush may not be entirely correct. Please confirm what sockets both the Bush & the Telewest have and what they are marked.

Scart (carries video & audio)

Component video & RCA audio (3 - red, blue & green - sockets for video, 2 - red & white for audio)

Composite video & RCA audio (1 - yellow - socket for video, 2 - red & white - sockets for audio)

S-video & RCA audio (1 din socket for video, 2 - red & white for audio)

HDMI (carries video & audio)

DVI & RCA audio (1 video, 2 - red & white for audio)

tellyfiend I dont have a manual for the Telewest box & been through manual for the Bush & no mention.

However these are the sockets on back of each box:

OK it appears then that your Bush recorder will only record in S-video or composite (also known as CVBS and video) usefully though it outputs in component. I'd connect as follows:

DVD Recorder to TV via 3 x Component and 2 x RCA Audio leads (setting the recorder to output this with progressive scan if available)

Sony DVD player to TV scart 2 via 3 x RCA AV plugs to Scart lead (setting the TV's scart 2 input to composite/CVBS/video)

Thomson DHD4000 to Recorder's AV2 via 1 x s-video and 2 x RCA audio to scart lead (setting the recorder's AV2 input to s-video)

Telewest video to Recorder's AV1 via scart to scart lead

Telewest TV to Thomson VCR via scart to scart lead and Thomson TV to TV AV1 via scart to scart lead (setting the Telewest & Thomson TV outputs and the TV's AV1 input to RGB

Be aware some leads are directional, so ensure you have the correct directional cable.

To record from Telewest, select AV1 on the recorder
To record from Thomson, select AV2 on the recorder
To watch the Sony, select AV2 on the TV
To watch the Thomson, select AV1 on the TV
To watch Telewest, either put the Thomson in standby or press the pass through button on it and select AV1 on the TV
To watch the recorder, select the component TV input, whatever it is called

As far as aeriel connections are concerned, you should go:

1. Aeriel > Thomson RF in
2. Thomson RF out > Recorder RF in
3. Recorder RF out > TV RF in

There is no need to connect the Telewest to the TV via coax and indeed, you could even leave out 2. & 3. above if you didn't want to watch or record analogue telly

Only poss problem maybe that there seems to be some confusion over the component output. Back of the box states "out" but the manual says it is "in"???!

Also tried setting this up on another tv with just an RF input & scart out to TV & the quality of picture it found was s*** to say the least. I also got a very minor electric shock from the casing!!!

Maybe that recorder is faulty? so will have to return but hey what can I expect for £40. (Know there's no chance of a replacement as they sold out)

Believe me it WILL be component out, there is no DVD recorder with component in available in the U.K.

Maybe the recorder is faulty, but more likely the recorder output and TV input were not matched e.g. not both set for the same type of signal

Only problem was that the DVD recorder did not

It would play ok but would not record from any source, just kept locking up. Took it back & got a refund.

Will continue to look around for another.
