My 18 month contract with T-Mobile ran out in July 2006 and I enquired what deals were around and was told about the T-Mobile Flext tariffs.

T-Mobile told me that I could not have the Sony Erriccson K800i handset but offered me the W810i. I really want the K800i but they said it would cost me £50

My brother and sister also want to renew and T-Mobile told them they could have the K800i for free as they spend more money on their monthly bills than I do

The stupid thing is if I were a new customer I could get the K800i for free. This means I would have to change my current mobile number.

It's ridiculous.

I haven't had an upgrade for 2 years. T-Mobile are not loyal to their customers. I've been with T-Mobile for about 10 years.

Not fair.

I agree with you there. It seems stupid to say the least.

Last time my contract was renewed I had the same issue. I told them to cancel my line and amazingly they could offer me handset after all. But its a risk that they wont budge and actually close your contact.

I told the guy that I want my PAC code and he said that he would lose commission but I said I don't care I want the PAC code so I can go to a different provider. He gave it to me and I asked to speak to a Manager .

He said Manager would say the same as him that they can't give me K800i. A Manager called me back but I was at theatre so hopefully they will call me again tomorrow. Don't know if speaking to Manager will make any difference but no harm in trying

You wouldn't lose your mobile number, you just port-out and back in again. Even though you've been a customer for a while, if someone is spending more than you have in your time with the network they'll get the better deals.

I had the same problem with o2. I wanted the k800i and they wanted £140.

Then I said I wanted my PAC to go to T-Mobile where I'dget it for free, on Relax 30 (currently with an extra 500 texts). O2 then said they'd match t-mobile but on an 18 month contract.

A week later and I'm now a happy T-Mobile customer with a 12 month contract and a k800i.

I don't understand what 'port-out and back in again' means as if I left T-Mobile and went back to T-Mobile I would have to have a new mobile number

I was on a 12 month Ufix contract with T-Mobile. (£15 per month)

At the end of my contract I called to upgrade wanting the same thing as you (a k800i).

They said it would cost me £120 to upgrade or they could give me a W850i for free but I told them I didnt want it. They started banging on about you dont get a memory card with the K800 but you get a 4gb card with the 850i.

I said the same thing "but I could get it for free if I signed a new contract" but they wouldnt budge. He said "if you want to keep your current handset I can give you half price line rental for 6 months.
I didnt want this, I wanted a new handset so he ended up taking the 6 months discount (£45) off the cost of the handset making the handset £75 which I ended up paying.

Im so annoyed now I just didnt accept the free W850i. Both my brother and sister have 850i's and they are soooooo much better than the k800. Less bulky, louder speaker, better themes that dont work on the k800 and its a slider so the main screen is protected from scratches and damage.

The only plus point for the k800 is the 3.2 camera.....BUT I cant tell the difference between the picture quality of the K750 and the k800. I wish I would have just gone with the free one they were offering and getting a huge memory stick free with it

Hope this helps

K800i is thicker only at the camera cover, the rest is almost identical. in fact even including the cover its only 1mm thicker.

And how can a slider protect the screen?? makes no sense at all. The only thing the slider protects on the w850 is the main keys !!

The k800 is soo much better camera than the w850i, the k800i has autofocus and that makes a huge difference. Also has a real xenon flash and that again is a huge advantage.

So mate but I think you should have gone for the k800i

You can take your number with you wherever you go. You can take a t-mobile number, put it on another network sim, and then move the number back to t-mobile

But if you put your number another network sim then you will be in a contract for at least 12 months before changing back to T-Mobile

Upgrades are not based on how long you've been with them. More than likely you've missed a few payment dates and this has changed your credit standing.

Sorry I was confused, that didnt make any sense I know.

My bro has the black one and my sister has the white one. I just prefer them to mine.....

The grass is always greener.......................

The xenon flash IS bright, but I would have prefered the k750o type as you could keep the light on while recording video, and also it was handy to have as a torch.
You cant do either of these on the K800.

Then it might be you don't fall in to the customer class to qualify for the deal you want. Actually it can be a great many things which affect your upgrade but length of time with them is not one of them, and rightfully too IMO.

My advice would be to wait until the month is almost over - salespeople are known to be very generous when they're just short of their targets and need a few more closures to get their bonus.

People are rewarded with better phones on upgrade for:

-Paying on time
-Using certain services
-Spending more money each month than the line rental
-Adding extras (bolt-ons for O2)

It also depends on how much you paid for the phone at the start of the contract.

As wernroe says, it depends which class or group you fall into. For example if your line rental is £20 a month and you are spending exactly £20, you won't get as gooder-offer as someone else who's line rental is £20 per month but is actually spending an extra £10 per months on texts.

Another very valuable thing when it comes to upgrades is how many incoming calls you get from other networks/BT landlines. Each minute of these earns T-Mobile and is taken into consideration when it come to upgrade time.

I've just got off the phone to a Manager at T-Mobile and they've agreed to give me K8ooi for free. So threatening to leave and asking to speak to a Manager does work.

Thanks to everyone who replied with help and suggestions
