I-pod advice

Are they worth it...honestly?

At the moment I have a Sony NW3000 20gb.

It is a beautiful piece of kit but is let down by the sluggish hardware that is downright annoying. You also can't get some of the accessories you get with I-pods.

I'm thinking of getting a 4g nano, any advice or recommendations would be appreciated.

I have a Sony and find Sonic Stage a V V V piece of hardware, its so slow, and sometimes hard to use. I'm also thinking of getting an iPod.

As with all things, there are people who love em and hate em.

Personally I love em. I've had a nano from day 1. No problems with it, easy to use, small and light, etc etc. Go and try one out in a shop and see if you like it.

.... and I'm in the other camp, although "hate" is perhaps a bit of a strong word.

I just find them restrictive. I don't like having to use a software interface, I don't like the fact that they don't use standard cabling, I don't like the range of music (and video ... I wanted a PMP rather than an MP3 player) they can/can't handle.

Battery life used to be an issue, but isn't any more.

The click wheel and interface are nice though.

I can see why they appeal to people, but they're not for me.

I have had a couple of them, and currently have an 8gb nano.

I find them very easy to use, and the battery life on my new nano is fine.

I like I tunes as well, I am familiar with it, and find it very easy to use.
I like it for its convenience.

I love my 30gig ipod.

But there are other portable music/video players out there that are just as good.

It's just a matter of personal choice.

I have a 2nd generation nano. Love it, the design, interface, interaction with iTunes etc.

Nooooo. I bought a Creative Zen 30G Vision M for a clear 10 quid cheaper than the iPod equivalent and it rocks so hard. It sounds great and the picture is brilliant. I've been watching new episodes of Lost, on the train, on the way to work and have almost missed my stop on a number of occasions because I have been so involved. The only downside is it comes with white ear buds. SO I bought a pair of sony 'black' ear buds because I don't want people to think I have an iPod.

I have a 5th generation Video ipod with 30gb of memory.(bought November 2005) I have about 725 music tracks, over 3000 photos and my full address book from outlook loaded on it. However I use it mainly to listen to podcasts. I have over 164 hours of unlistened to podcasts (crazy yes over 6 days worth)which are a mixture of lengths from 5 minutes to a couple of hours and a mixture of genre including free books from Podiobooks and Librivox. There is still about 13 GB of memory free.
I recommended the ipod very highly for podcasts. You can make playlists daily using the on the go feature. It will restart from the point you switch off. Fast forward and back. The screen will display the title, any artwork and a description if any.
The ipod is a lovely looking piece of kit. However as I am a clumsy person I wisely bought an Ivo iSkin to cover it beauty. This has proved a great accessory.
I use it with itunes and in fact I used itunes for a long time before buying an ipod. I used to burn the podcasts to CD's to play in my car. I now have my car wired for ipod use through the car stereo system.
