Can anyone please let me know which 32 inch LCD to go for - It's a minefield. Not sure what the picture and sound will be like from TV through the Aerial and standard SKY Digital (Sky+) though.

I've read that the Toshiba 32WLT66 is a good un', but can't tell from going to Currys and Comet what the actual picture would be like.

Is it me or do LCD's vary in picture quality when looking in these stores ??

Prices upto £700 would be appreciated. Can Toshiba owners please let me know what the picture is like from Sky Digital (Not HD) on the 32WLT66.

Many Thanks

Dave

Yes, picture quality does vary. One problem is they want to show off HD, and not show SD, the defintion of the vast majority of broadcasts. There is a large degree of variability with SD performance!

I have the 37WL66 and had problems with the picture quality using my Pace SKY+. I was just being picky as I had never really liked the output from the SKY+ comapred to my orginal Grundig Digibox.

Those with the Freeview Regza 66 models do say the picture from its DVB tuner is very good.

The good news is that Regza'a have Feroudja controller chips. They scale as well as Feroudja equipped DVD players, so you don't to think about upgrading to a scaling DVD player. They also have input specific filters. So you can filter the SKY+ input to get a better image, and filter the DVD
less, or not at all.

The Tosh 32WLT66 is the best picture quality of all 32inch LCDs that I have seen using SD picture sources (Freeview, Sky, Sky+, DVD). And it's a steal at the moment, because it has been superceded by the 32WLT68 (which for some reason hasn't won the same plaudits as its predecessor), so 66s can be bought for less than £600. Buy it - you won't be disappointed!

Thanks jer

My Sky + box is an Amstrad and have currently got a 24" Hitachi CRT TV.

Most people say that the LCD picture is not as good as CRT, so I don't want to change to a crappier picture. Do you reckon this will be case if I choose the 32WLT66 ?

The TV has won numerous awards from TV mags and has favourable comments from users.

Thanks

The Regza's have the tools to solve problems which others don't seem to have.

All HD sets are far more transparent than an SD CRT, that's what the extra defintion gives you. They cannot mask bad SD DVB broadcasts like a lower definition SD CRT. Good SD DVB broadcasts, and scaled DVD look fantastic, crap SD looks even worse.

I've had this set for 3 weeks now and can easily say it's my best buy in ages. The picture is fantastic as long as the viewing distance is about 7 feet or more. Otherwise, the colours are incredibly vibrant, no waxiness of skin, no probs with motion blur (footy looks awesome - pity I support Leeds!). It just takes you to play around with the settings, a THX disc or one of those DVD calibration discs produce great results. You are at the mercy of bitrates regarding Sky/Freeview but it's a small price. You won't regret it.

Thanks deezer

Good to know about the picture quality.

I had read that it is one of the best, but coudn't really tell when looking in Currys and Comet.

I suppose it's all down to the settings of the system.

PS - What code do you use for Sky (Sky+), as I couldn't find one. Is it the same as WL56 ???

Cheers (You're the Leeds fan then !!!!)

I got rid of Sky mate so I can't help you there! I've just bought a HDMI DVD player and have been watching everything I can get my hands on. It all looks so good. That's the other bonus about this TV; you get 2 HDMI sockets. There are sets 2-300 quid more that this with just the one.

I've got the cheaper version without the Freeview tuner as I've no aerial at my new house, and got Sky HD, so no point really.

I got it for the reasonable price of £575 (PM me if you want the link).

Overall excellent picture quality on the 32WL66. 2x HDMI's, 2x SCART (1xRGB), S-VIDEO etc etc. Superb picture quality via HD channels which is to be expected. SD pictures are good to excellent. It all depends on the bit rate of the channels. Example some of the shopping channels look cr@p, but I don't watch them anyway.

I've had it since October, and after some tweaking about with the brightness, contrast LCD background light etc, it looks fantastic and much better than some of the more expensive Samsung LCD's of the same size (Samsung used as an example as a friend has one and he's convinced also that the Tosh has better picture quality).

This set sounds excellent for the money and it's top of my shortlist at the mo. Can anyone let me know how it handles auto switching between widescreen and 4:3 programmes on digital? I toggled through the aspect ratio options in John Lewis but didn't notice an "auto" setting. Will a 4:3 broadcast from inbuilt freeview or scart-attached Sky digibox automatically display as 4:3 with bars left and right (as I prefer), or will the TV do some sort of crop/stretch malarky - with true 4:3 having to be selected manually?

Nope, a 4:3 broadcast on either the integrated Freeview, or on a Sky programme if Sky is connected via scart, or a DVD if that is connected via scart, will switch to true 4:3 (with vertical bars down left and right side) rather than one of the artificially zoomed pictures (Cinema 1 and 2, Super Live 1 and 2) where you get no black bars, but you also lose some of the picture at the top and bottom. You can of course then scroll to one of the zoomed pictures if you want.

That's great - the Tosh stays at the top of my shortlist. I can feel a purchase coming on very soon...

The WLZ66 is the name of it in Germany - I don't think it's available in UK. Amazon are selling WLT66 for £600, so are Digital Direct and Empire Direct.

I have the Regza model of this TV and have no trouble with SKYHD, Freeview or analogue TV. This tv has two tuners (Freeview and analogue) ok for areas without Freeview. Excellent picture and easy to set up. Also has two HDMI sockets.
