New: the Eurovision Dance Contest

Eurovision Dance ContestNews from the 'kitchen'! Remember 2003, when the Eurovision Song Contest got a little brother? Five years ago, the EBU started preparations for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, and in the fall of 2007, the family will be expanded with a cousin; the Eurovision Dance Contest!

A kick-off production meeting took place yesterday in London at the BBC. This newly-developed international production consists of a ballroom, Latin and freestyle dance competition between mixed couples.

The following EBU members have expressed interest in participating in the first competition: ORF (Austria), DR (Denmark ), ARD (Germany ), RTE (Ireland ), TVP (Poland), RTP (Portugal), RTR (Russia), TVE (Spain), TV4 (Sweden), SRG idée suisse (Switzerland), TROS (The Netherlands) and BBC (UK). Ukrainian broadcaster NTU and Croatian HRT have also expressed their interest. A final list of participants will be made public later this year.

The Eurovision Dance Contest will be broadcast live and will take place somewhere at the beginning of the new television season, after the 2007 summer holidays. The show will be hosted by BBC and organized and produced by Splash Media and Sunset+V in collaboration with Eurovision TV. •

It might be good it might be dreadful, much will depend on the treatment it is given. The success of SCD was down to the fact that Ballroom and Latin dance was finally shown to the public, warts and all. They saw that it could be gruelling, painful, hard work, rather than all sequins and taffeta.

The Eurovision Song Contest has suffered in recent years especially her in the UK, where it is seen as camp and something at which to poke fun. Ballroom and Latin dance has come a long way since the latter days of Come Dancing and I don't think that anyone involved professionally (and at the amateur and social level either come to that) would want it to go the same way.

I will however keep an eye out on this, it could be great - the standard of competion internationally is phenomenal.

Wow I'm not a fan of ESC but this sounds v.v.exciting!
So would the public get to vote who competes for their country/nation like in ESC or not?
